Can I install an XM satellite on 09 CVO Roadglide?
« on: January 26, 2012, 02:00:03 PM »

Hi, I have been reading the posts on CVO Harley website for some time.  Can I install an XM satellite on my current 09 CVO Roadglide? What does it take?  I've been reading the posts about antenna placement----is there a consensus on where to place the antenna for the best reception?  Are you using your XM, as I've been reading the volume isn't very good? Thanks

Yes,

you have to buy the module from HD store.  Simple plug and play installation.

You can add the XM module to your radio. Check the P&A catalog for part number and price.  A better option might be to get a Zumo 665 gps which is XM capable and hook it to your radio.

Yes you can install XM.  I did and it's not exactly easy.  You'll need:

XM Module & antenna, about $450 from HD.
Ultra main wiring harness:  about $140.
Antenna bracket:  "Cheap, only about $25."

I did it because I got the parts from a friend who removed because he went with the Road Tech Zumo Nav. with XM.  Cost of parts from HD will exceed $600 and install requires removing the main wiring harness and replacing with the Ultra harness.  Only benefit is that if you ever want to install CB, you will have the wiring.

An alternative is to go with the Road Tech™ zūmo 665 GPS Navigator with XM #92238-09  but that route is even pricier!

Edit:  The antenna works fine and is placed on the bracket described above which is attached to the radio.  For some reason, the volume is less than FM which is in turn, less than CD's.  So to get volume, you'll need an after market amp and really, speakers to take full advantage.

You probably already know that XM is terrific!

Hope this helps.

What Rio said, or what Ultrafxr said.  If you do the GPS thing, you'll have to route a stereo patch cable from the output of the GPS to the AUX in on the HK headset.

On the RG, the reception seems to be better than it was on my SEUC...probably due to fairing design and XM antenna location.  You'll still get a dropped signal in heavily forested areas, in mountains, and of course, tunnels.  But that happens in my car too, though not as much as on the bike.  Volume is not an issue, at least on my bike.

Order the parts from one of the 20% discount HD stores on line.

The up side is that you can take the same gps/xm with you to your next bike! :2vrolijk_21:   And if you shop around, it's also cheaper than the HD module route that Greg mentions above.

Two other options, portable XM receiver with the headphone output feeding into the AUX jack or the XM Internet app on some sort of smart phone.  I use a portable XM receiver in the house, my car and truck and on the Harley and the reception is about the same as the XM radio installed on GM vehicles.
