Grey Clutch Oil?
« on: July 13, 2006, 09:37:48 PM »

I changed the oil in my clutch today and noticed the oil was a grey murkey colour.  Anyone know why this might be happening?  Does this oil normally change coulour? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

It is the clutch facings I believe.  My oil was never grey but the drain plug had grey particles on it.  Haven't changed it since I put Redline MTL in.  You should be ok..

Canuck,

Are you talking about the primary oil, or the hydraulic clutch fluid (DOT 4)?  The primary oil will develop a grey appearance due to clutch material and wear particles from the primary chain/sprockets and tensioner shoe.  It's normal.

That's the concern, I am actually talking about the hydraulic clutch fluid!

It appears that somehow you are getting condensation or some moisture content into the hydraulics.  Any water at all in DOT 4 causes a milking grey color.

Canuck,

I noticed when I bled mine shortly after purchase that the fluid was dark grey coming out of the bleeder fitting.  It turns out that this is due to a lubricant that is used in the slave cylinder (secondary clutch actuator in harley speak) and master cylinder during assembly.  The same lubricant comes with the service kits for rebuilding both units.  If you flush the old fluid out completely, you probably won't see this on your next check of the fluid.
