Auto Train...Anyone Used for Motorcycles?
« on: February 17, 2012, 09:52:07 AM »

Looking for riders that have used the Amtrak Auto Train to transport their HD (Sanford, FL to Lorton VA).  Especially interested in the care and strapping down of the bikes by the Amtrak staff.  Not much info from a Google search on this.

I have not used it myself, but a good friend of mine has. He said it was a great experience. Said everything was done professionally. He is a really picky guy too. Not sure about the details. I will be able to talk to him more tomorrow.

I have used it several times.  Very positive experience every time.  The Amtrak personnel are very good and understand how we are about our motorcycles.  Bring your own soft ties - they do not have any.  Use the Bag liners so you can bring your stuff on board the train with you - once the bike is loaded, you have no access.  Arrive early as it takes a bit longer to properly load the bikes - they are secured (2) onto a "skid" which is then loaded into the railcar.  If possible, travel first class - which means get a sleeper.  MUCH nicer than coach and priority meal seating (and free meals).

If you'll go to the Amtrak Auto Train website it gives all the details.
