Fork Lock / FOB Issue
« on: February 24, 2012, 04:00:57 PM »

Just wanted to pass on a major problem I ran into recently.  I put the Ignition Switch to the Fork Lock position, then locked the bike with the FOB.  When I hit unlock on the FOB, everything unlocked but the Fork Lock, Ignition Switch would not move.  Called the dealer who sent out a technician, he couldn't get it to unlock on-site. Had the bike towed to the dealer (more on that later), after disassembly they discovered the wire that remotely locks the pins in the neck had wrapped around the pins.  So if your forks do not unlock with the FOB, you know what it is.  Please dont start telling me thats why I don't lock the forks, blah, blah ......again, its on the bike and it should work correctly just like the fuel gauge!  On a lighter note - ever try to find a a tow truck - to include from HOG - that can get the bike on a flatbed with the forks locked?  Friggin unreal!!  I even talked to a dealer recommended motorcycle tow company who didn't have a front wheel skate.

I would have thought it would unlock by using the key.  Do you know why that did not work?

Key wasn't even used to lock the fork, only the FOB.  On my 11' CVO Road Glide if you place the Ignition Switch in the Fork Lock position the FOB locks the forks along with the bags.

Just wondering if you put the key in the ignition, then turned it to the locked position, then back, if that would have done anything to remedy the situation?  Too late to know now, and you probably don't want to know now anyway  ;)

Mine always feels a little funky when I turn it to the locked position, even before engaging the lock with the FOB, but so far, no issues.

I have read of a couple of others who have had a problem with this and had to have the switch replaced.

That's exactly why I don't lock the forks . . .

I don't know if the key would have worked or not but that's why I carry the key on a ring with the fob.

I've had my FOB lock the forks and then not unlock them.  I keep a key on the FOB ring and when I used it, it unlocked the forks.  It's only happened to me twice, but both times the key worked to unlock the forks.

I did try the key when mine wouldn't unlock, didnt do a thing because the wire was wrapped around the fork lock pins.  If you lock the forks with the ign in the lock position it WILL UNLOCK with the key.  I imagine this was designed this way in the event you your fob battery dies and you need to unlock the forks.

Mine, had problems from day one, the key would unlock it when it did not respond to the remote fob, you know you have a problem when turning the switch it feels like it is binding.
Recently had the speedo & switch housing apart to make some modifications to the ACC and cruise switch, replaced the cruise switch with the combo spot/cruise switch. While removing the ignition knob I found the wire that is attached to the knob was not installed completely and there was a kink in the wire due to excessive slack, when I reinstalled the knob, I removed all slack and made sure the wire was installed flat (not twisted) when running thru the detent that runs along the shaft.
Now it turns real smooth (off,on,acc) and the electric lock works perfectly every time.

There you have it, I'm sure mine was the same except the wire locked up the fork pins - good thing you found it early.

I had it happen but when I used the key the whole ignition came out. I spent about an hour Trying to get it back in while waiting for the tow truck. Luckily the tow co sent 2 people. We used a plastic skid and muscle from the 3 of us to get the bike up on the flatbed. It took about 2 weeks for them to send out a new ignition. I now know how to get the ignition back on so hopefully won't get stuck again.

My bike had the issue from day one.  Dealer replaced the ignition.  The lock would unlock with the key if it would not with the fob.  The fob would work if I turned the ignition s it would go towards the locked position.

mine did it also, unlocked with key whole ignition came out. put it back in, messed with it till i got power then started it and rode to dealer. it did it on them also, they found the wire for the lock was causing this. moved wire to other side of the lock pin and have not had a problem since.
