superpremium5 oil filter or Evo Filter
« on: July 10, 2011, 11:06:09 AM »

I tried to see if there were any previous posts on this and couldn't find any so here is my question. Does anyone feel  that the HD Evo style oil filter (part no. 63796-77A )could be substituted for the superpremium5 oil filter (part no. 63798-99A ) on a twin cam? And since the Evo oil filter is probably less restrictive give the twin cam engine better oil flow?  Just something that crossed my mind. ( I have not consulted any mechanic about this ) CAHDBIKER

One thing to keep in mind...the HD 5 micron filter material is not ALL 5 micron material.  That is simply the smallest particle that SOME of the material will catch.  The rest of it passes right through like any other filter.  On top of that, if the filter is not allowing enough flow, the bypass opens, so I doubt very seriously if you'd see any improvement in oil pressure/flow.  And if you're judging all that by the HD oil pressure gauge...well, let's just say they are not all that accurate.

There is some discussion of this here:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=63131.0

The bottom line for me is that I think it's a bunch of BS to say you need a 5 micron filter.  I use K&N chrome filters for two reasons...they do the job, and they have a nut welded on the end of the can to make changing them REALLY easy.  Claiming that filter X is a 5 micron filter and filter Z is a 10 micron filter is all a bunch of smoke and mirrors, IMO.  How was the testing done?  To what standard are they being tested?  While I think one should use a high quality filter on any engine, I'm pretty sure a company like K&N, or Amsoil, Wix, etc, etc, would not market a filter for a twin cam engine that would allow problems with oil pressure or flow through whatever passages in the motor.

If a person changes oil/filter at the recommended intervals, the motor is not going to implode due to oil flow and whether 5 micron particles were being caught by the oil filter...it will implode from poorly designed parts and poor engine design in general.

Don't know what the EVO filter is rated, but there are so many other viable alternatives, I wouldn't buy a HD filter anyway.  Price has nothing to do with it...I just order them 2 or 3 at a time and have them shipped to me along with the oil.

Since were talking oil filters thought I would pass on. If you go to Sturgis or any of the big bike rallys and decide to use one of those on the corner oil change places check the filter they will use. Glad I did as the one they were going to use had only three holes and I asked for a better one and found they had choices. Just thought I would mention.

If you were to go to the K&N catalog and look up the filter for an EVO, you would find that even they do not recommend the same filter for the EVO that they recommend for a Twin Cam.  There's more to it than just micron ratings, like anti-drainback valves in one version but not in the other.

If all you want is less restriction and thus a little "free" power, go with one of those permanent metal screen types that some companies sell for hundreds of bucks.  Never have to replace them, just clean out the boulders they stop every once in awhile.  Not so sure how "free" that extra power really is, however.  I can buy a lot of regular filters, as in enough to last me about 15 years or more, for the same price.  And that's not considering any accelerated wear and overhauls due to poor filtration.

Buy yourself a 4 pack of K&N 171-C's from Eastern Performance or one of the other on-line places, and don't worry about your filter.  Or keep buying Harley's Super Premium filter; unlike some of their stuff the oil filters are actually very well made.

The EVO oiling system is very sensitive as it relates to the breather system.  Many many cases of heavy oil out the breathers have been attributed to running the restrictive 5micron filter on the EVO.  I always recommend the less restrictive filter.  The TC filters oil pre motor and the EVO filters post motor.

I'm certainly no expert in this matter but I was going to offer that very bit of information.

If you have the 07 and later pump, i have had no issue with the TC oil filters (we use s&s and k&n). If you are running into a problem with oil in the breathers, then start with the evo filter change before doing anything else. That is the cheapest solution to the problem.

I don't think that I would waste my $$$ on it myself. All you are going to do is bypass more oil due to the tighter restriction.  Best bet is using OEM or suitable replacement filter and change oil and filter regularly. JMHO

What do you guy's think of the K&P Engineering Billet filters? From what I read the seem to be the bomb!!

I assume what you read is the advertising hype they generate, and the "testimonials" that can be found online these days swearing everything is "the bomb" regardless of reality.

There is only one way that filter can flow seven times as much as a regular filter, it doesn't actually filter very much.  But it is reuseable, so as long as you don't mind the mess when you take it apart to clean the boulders out it should last a long time.  Unless the glue securing the stainless steel mesh fails, like some I've read about.

There is another company that sells a similar metal mesh "lifetime" filter, and last time I looked it was even more expensive and their claims were even more ridiculous.  My advice, steer clear and use a good quality regular filter, like the K&N or the Harley filters.
