Is it the oil or just Qwinky-dink?
« on: July 16, 2006, 09:20:45 AM »

:'(  Ok its not good either way but I switched the 01 SERG to Mobil 1 V-Twin, from the SYN3, yesterday, then last night after we had hit about 100 miles 3rd gear started screackn and whaling.  It got louder the longer you went, had to get it home.  At first thought it was coming from the primary.  After getting it home and up on the stand listening to it up in the air I have come to the sinking conclusion that it is in the trans and it sounds like a bearing.  My question is I am not much a believe that the oil switch could cause this but no I am wondering.  Any thoughts?  I was going to pull the gears out myself today.  PS. I did pull the magnet out of the trans last night and there was no metal  on it and the bike has had oil changed in it every 2500 miles so the oil is still clear.  Thanks for any input

Godeater,

A trans bearing failure one day after changing the lube could cause a person to wonder, but trust me, there is no way that changing to Mobil 1 from SYN-3 could cause a failure.  Very likely that this same failure would have occurred at the same time even if you hadn't changed the lube at all.

I'm going to have to agree with Jerry on this one, as you just can't get a better product than the Mobil 1, in my opinion.  If anything, running the Syn3 caused the wear in the first place.  Sorry to hear about your problems though, and hope it's an easy/quick fix so you can get back on the road!!
