BLM, I was told to stay with the stock oil pump. And I'm running SE/JIMS lifters.  I'm still wondering about the stock oil pump myself, but that's what I was told to run [smiley=confused5.gif] All is cleared up and running good now though. Must have been a blead out lifter or something [smiley=confused5.gif] All is good now.

I'd be interested in their answer to the "why" question on not increasing the oil flow to the top end.  May not mean anything to the motor, but it sure makes me feel better when I'm seeing nearly  30 psi at an idle when riding in the summer down here in the swamp.

You got that right. Nothing like peace of mind to see that great oil pressure. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

D00d, were you as stunned as I was about HOW MUCH difference the change in pump and the little pressure relief valve made?  I mean, it's like; suddenly; the oil pressure Gods said, "and let it be stable, and it was good."

Yes I was, but you know what is even better then that is the look I get when I show others my oil pressure gauge at idle. ;D They all want to know what did you do, who makes it, where can I get it, how much it costs?

Have done that twice at the local bike shop.  Was great too.  Was standing on the lot listening to this snot nose from inside the shop explain to a couple of guys why their bikes "had to" work that way.  When he was done tapped them on the shoulder and said "watch this."  Then watched as both of them went to find the snot nose again.

Installed the Fueling oil pump, cam plate, and lifters. Oil pressure at idle after 150 miles in 90 degree heat was 30 psi. At 70 mph, 2600 rpm, pressure is over 45psi. Gotta love it.
Put over 1000 miles last week breaking her in. Hope to get on the dino week after next. Going to Vegas Tuesday for a convention and a fly and ride trip.

That's nearly identical behavior as three or four of us that I've spoken with are seeing from the oiling system after the pump change.  Nice solid, stable and repeatable numbers.  Makes you feel good about the change (and wonder why Harley didn't have it that way to begin with).

Hey there BLM,

I recently spoke with Hals about the oil pump debate. They told me that the HD pump is tried & true and I'll have no issues with the stock pump and pressure with my build. He went on to say that Fueling is a good pump but sometimes you might run into problems with scavanging and too much blowby. They recommended the new S&S oiling set up as an option. They told me that they've built alot of high output motors in the past and always used the stock twin cam oil pump with no issues. So I guess that's why they told me to stay with the o.e.m. pump. Oh well, I guess I'll see what happens down the road...all has been good so far, except when I ran it down a quart in the high elevation.

Stay cool down in Florida  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

One possibility could be the oil venting issue that many folks seem to have at higher rpm.  From what I've read on the subject, the leading theory for the "venting" issue is that oil is not draining from the rocker box fast enough and is therefore overloading the breather system.  With a higher volume and pressure oil pump, you would be pumping even more oil to the top end.  I have no definitive information to allow me to state this as fact, but it does make sense that if the oil doesn't drain rapidly from the rocker boxes the breathers will eventually be overwhelmed.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

btw -if you read the S&S literature on their reed valve solution for the venting issue, they show that the air flow in the engine is a big part of the draining issue.  The air pumping in the crankcase is forced into the gear case and through the oil drain passages.  This air flow would impede the draining of the oil, and the one-way reed valves reduce that air flow.  The S&S explanation is attached.

Jerry-

I also have the S&S reed valve installed. It works great!

Thanks for the more detailed description regarding the oil pump. That's kinda what they described to me...but I didn't elaborate in my reply.
