oil leak
« on: June 15, 2006, 12:03:07 AM »

:-/  I recently purchased a 2001 fltrsei2 with 10000 miles on it. My maiden voyage was from Palm Springs to home which was about 450 miles. When I got the bike home I noticed oil had dripped from the air filter onto the point cover. I now find that about every 150 miles or so the drops are back. I have a stage 1 breather on this bike. My real concern is this normal? And if so should I change to a different breather where the oil will go directly into the intake instead of into the filter? Any recommendations?

Yes, its normal. What your getting is blowby from the oil mist in the heads. When your on the bike for long periods at high speeds it will be worse. Some members here have had luck with the Ness Big Sucker as it vents further into the intake.

Oh, and buy the way...welcome to the site. I'm just over the hill in San Leandro and there is a bunch of us from the Bay area. We'll have to meet up for a ride sometime soon!

Hey Badpig2001, Welcome! Knowledgeable folks here (as you are finding out), and lots of laughs, too.  This site is swell! [smiley=multi.gif]

BP,
Our 01 SERG has (maybe had) the same problem when run at highway speeds.  I put the Doherty Machine Myst-Free breather assemblies on it and the run to Cripple Creek will be the first real run we've been able to do since the install.  I'll try to remember to let you know how they do when we get home.  It sucks getting old!!!!  CRS!!!!

Welcome to the site badpig, I'm with articdude go for the Doherty Machine Myst Free breather system. I never had a big problem but do have a tendency to ride fairly hard & got a small amount of weeping from the breather tubes. I have only had them in for a couple of hunderd miles but so far so good. I did actually have my air cleaner off tonight while installing a SE chrome backing plate & found the breather hoses to be completely dry.

Cheers

Thanks to all. I took a gander at the mystfree site and that looks like an easy fix.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Welcome to the site, and as Jim (HD Dude) says we're just over the hill and down 680 from you. I had the same issue on my old FLTRSEI, 95% of the time when running pretty hard for long distances on the freeways. I did change out the SE air filter to Ness Big Sukah and that really helped a lot. Again welcome  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Dude,
Wait for the oil ring to break in......get a Doherty Power Pacc breather,  a good set of pipes (I like Hooker's) and a PCIII frpom power commander.  Once tuned....ride that bad boy like you rode your first girlfriend.......
BTW,  Pinch the Hooker's closed (set to torque.......heavy bike and all....you'll love it)...

SORRY,
I didn't see that the bike had 10K on it..........Put a Power Pacc on it....and what I said.  If it still puckes oil, have it looked at by your local stealer......may not have been broken in correctly (which in my book is either ON or OFF......you know the game).....

Let me know how you make out....

I went with the Ness big sucker. I feel a quicker throttle response (maybe just me) and have not had any mess for 400 miles. Thanks gents.
