I recommend the Hyatt Regency, River Front hotel. We had a room that enabled us to watch huge container ships move just feet outside our window. It was kind of eerie, because some were so close, you could not see the top standing back in the room a bit -- and the windows are large!
The Savannah Riverfront district is beautifully restored and has lots of restaurants and clubs. When I was still a teen, it was a dump and had not been worked on since the late 1800s, but now it is a tourest destination point. Locals too.
Be sure to catch the various tours too. There is the "Garden of Good and Evil tour that takes you through some of the actual homes written about in the book. You can also take a tour of Bonaventure Cemetery, where Johnny Mercer is buried, along with some of the Charactors in the book. We used to take dates to that cemetery to scare them into submission...he, he. Nothing onerous, just good fun.
Depending on how much time you have, you can tour some of the homes that have been lovingly restored and/or Fort Polaski, which is between Tybee Island and Savannah. You'll have to have transportation for that trip, but it is well worth the trip. Tybee is a great place to visit too, with fortifications left over from the War of 1812.
Trivia:
Savannah is in Chastain County, GA. The namesake of Chastain County “Renne Chastain” was a distant Uncle of mine…and I lived there and didn't know it until the last couple of years tracing my family genealogy.
