The cvo 103   From 2003-2006 happens to be one of the best ever.   You will read on here on how well they run and last.  My 04 has 72k miles and still runs great.  Get rid of the stock cams and go with gear operated and you will be good to go. I went with S&S 570s and they work great.   Motor doesn't even run hot.     You won't be sorry with that one.   :2vrolijk_21:

My 03 FLHRSEI2 has 25,000 on it. I added a Power Comander III. Only other mod is a SE Stage 1 Air Cleaner Kit.
Had it dyno Tuned. Tq= 90.02 and Hp = 88.40.

Care to guess what the TQ and HP are for that new 2012 103?

The CVO 103 (A model)has a crank(4 3/8 stroke) with the full pin end rods which is far superior to the new style tapered, the 253 camsets make great paperweights, not much good for anything else, the heads have a hemispherical chamber shape and very little if any squish area but the port layout is a great platform for future performance upgrades as these heads will make power. A weak link compared to the new style, the chain tensioners but that is really an easily remedied problem if you are a high mileage guy, if not, service them at regular intervals and ride.

If you want to compare a 2004 to a 2012, you need to think about one heck of a lot more than just the engine.  I agree that the CVO103 is superior to the current TC103 in several important areas like the crank and rods, but does that really offset the big differences in the rest of the motorcycle?  The 2012 has the new better handling Touring frame, closed loop EFI, better brakes as well as ABS, better electronics including integrated cruise control and electronic throttle control, etc, etc.  I don't think I'd make my decision strictly on the engines.

Comparing motor to motor, the CVO 103 is the best bang for your buck motor Harley ever produced. No crank issues with this baby and no spec issues adding gear drive cams.  My wife's 04 is a basically stock 103 with exception to True Duals, SE Ignition, and 540G Cams... Last dyno showed 105 HP and 103 TQ..

Bone stock with no mods.. anywhere between 65 to 68 Hp and 70 to 75 TQ.

Razorback..this is what I wanted to hear...it would be the -11 hydro kit for me in the cam chest and maybe upgrade a mild andrews n cam..

Jerry I hear what you are saying...but I read so much about the problems with the newer ones with TBW...all the heat ect...ect.. sure abs would be great but you can't miss what you never had...I ride an 06 ultra loaded as much as any cvo and it will not be ging anywhere... soon to be triked...my feeling is the MOCO did their best work between 02 and 06..and what you can't seem to find is a take out 103...after what Razorback and CVObiker had to say I am after an early 103...I would buy the pumpkin on here but it is the wrong color but at the right price...

Close to the same price?  I'd get the new bike, hands down.

Well, there may or may not be a bit more heat with the newer engine, but it's really hard to beat the closed-loop system, the electronic throttle control, the better chassis, the 6th gear, etc...
