Add Harley stereo controls to a 2008 FLHRSE4?
« on: March 17, 2012, 07:27:47 PM »

I have a 2008 SERK and I plan to add a dead center fairing with a stereo. I was hoping to put in a Sony marine receiver and integrate stock HD stereo handlebar controls using the Biketronics adapter/converter.

My bike has blank "plugs" on the handlebar controls where the stereo controls would be.

Has anyone done this before?

even if you had them you wouldn't have the part of the harness the interface module is looking for, i'm sure it could be done but it wont be a simple plug and play job

Even if you used an Electra Glide main harness to add the audio connections you'd still have other problems.  All the additional wire (probably) could be hidden inside your new add-on fairing.  But the fairing would then never be detachable in any practical sense as all the additional harness wouldn't fit inside the nacelle.  There'd also still be a good sized bit of wire exposed beside or behind the nacelle somewhere as it made the jump up inside the add-on fairing.

the extra wiring can be a big issue in an RK nacelle

not easy getting it all back together i have a lot of wires going up into my dragonfly nacelle

i milled out the back of the handlebar/riser cover to use as a pass thru

The Biketronics adapter takes the Harley handlebar controls and converts them to work with the Sony (or other) head unit. I can't imagine the two extra switches add more than 6-8 conductors. I'm sure it would take a little studying of the Biketronics pinout, but it could be incorporated into a single quick release plug for fairing removal.

I saw this review on their site "I added handcontrols to my 05 RoadKing with a Dragonfly Fairing using a Kenwood radio . I call and biketronics hooked me up with I need to complete the job with great tech support"

Anyways, just wondering if this had been done on a SERK before.  I was hopeing there might be switches behind my blank covers.

Yeah, it looks like a mess of wires in there. I'll have to pull it apart and check it out.

No switches within the covers.  Changing out the harnesses within the handlebars to include those that have the audio switches and wiring is only part of the battle though.  What you're missing is that the Road King harness is a much smaller and simpler harness than is the harness for any model (Road Glide, Street Glide, Electra Glide) that has the connections for a radio built within it.

The Biketronics or the HawgWired interface units interface between the radio and the main harness; within the fairing.  Those interface kits can't work with just the handlebar controls.  They need the rest of the OE radio harness (i.e., not from a Road King) to work.
