Installing slip- on pipes
« on: March 26, 2012, 02:46:41 PM »

Adding some new CFR slip-ons and wanted to see if anyone had some helpful installation tips.

Anything would help.

Done it once- went easier that I thought.

Make sure to buy new "Torca" clamps, which are the muffler clamps- one on each side. Apparently they aren't supposed to be re-used.

Also, seal the two ends of the pipes where they slip on each other with Hi Temp gasket sealant- it will prevent any exhaust leaks.

The one mistake I made was thinking that I should just push the slip on as far as I can over the header pipe until it stops, and both sides will line up even. Not so, and I didn't realize this until after I bolted everything back up. So, before you tighten everything up, take a straight edge ruler and satisfy yourself that each muffler is sticking out the same amount. Also move the mufflers right and left to ensure they are even in the bag cut outs, then tighten up the hanger bolts.

All good except that the clamps can be re-used multiple times, at least in my experience.

I see I'm not the only one up so late  ;D

Ya probably, but I figure the Service Manual says to replace them and I think they were only $10 each at the stealer, so I figured what the hell.

The clamp design is for one time use, but with a relatively new clamp that isn't corroded or otherwise damaged, it is possible to slide/pry the wedge back a bit so it can be reinstalled correctly.  I've reused them when changing mufflers on a new bike, but always replace them if the parts have been in use for an extended period of time.  As long as you get a good leak free joint, it's all good.   btw, I recommend always using the OEM type clamps versus the narrow band clamps some of the aftermarket pipe companies supply (like V&H).

When I installed mine I did a search on youtube and found this and followed it. Did not need an impact wrench tho. Here is the link.

Keep in mind I have only been able to ride the bike a couple of times with my new CFR slip-on's. Yes, even the weather in Southern Cal and my work schedule can get in the way of a weekend ride. However, the CFR slip-on's sound great even with the standard pipes. Just an FYI, If I do decided i need a little more volume Cary at CFR suggested going with a true dual pipe and do not go with any of the X-pipes out in the market. Again, just his input.

I'll bet he said that not because he thinks it will perform better with true duals, but because I believe a bike with true duals is easier to tune (since he knows the CFR's are notoriously difficult to tune).
