New Battery Install????
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:26:12 AM »

Been having slow starts on BLUU plus sometimes the motor kicking back until yesterday. Battery final died and ended up taking the core into dealer to buy new battery. Part's guy tells me wow you have gotten good use out of your 12 yr old battery when he looked up the battery in the system. This all confusses me because I use a battery tender everyday and my CVO is a 2010 SEUC. My thought is now how did I end up with a 12 yr old battery??? This just adds to my fear of putting BLUU in the blackhole because you never know who's part's your going to end up with. I know Harley is going to tell me that battery was installed on my 2010 at the factory and it was 10 yrs old when they installed it and that is normal practice from the assy line. The bad thing about all this is I cant prove it!!  >:(

Another possibility is the dealership part's guy was actually a 12 year old and didn't know what he was talking about...   :nixweiss:

It's incredibly unlikely your 2 year old bike had a 12 year old battery in it from the factory...

I agree!! I would have given him the benifit of dought!! That just couldn't happen even though the battery was caked in dirt. Unfortanatly I looked at the manufacture date on the battery and it was 2000.

If you can wait a couple of days buy one of these on Ebay for $90 including shipping.  Deka batteries are made by the same company that make the OEM battery.  I installed one of these in my 2008 FLHRSE4 a few weeks back

If it were me, I'd ask for a new battery at Moco's expense since they "supposedly" put a 10 year old battery in a brand new bike.

I guarantee you'll find out real quick how old it really is or isn't.

X2...

2 years on a battery that has been kept on a battery tender is waaaaaaay under "normal".  If it is indeed a 2000 battery, it was toast before it was installed.  How did it get so "muddy"?

I guess the point I am trying to state here is that the battery that went bad in BLUU and was extremly dirty was not my originnal battery in my 2010 SEUC. Some how it found its way into my bike after all the engine changes and there is no way for me to prove it isn't my original battery. The only thing on the battery is the manufacture date of either 1999 or 2000. Can't determine if it is a 9's or a zero. My question is does the MOCO use 10+ yr old batteries in there new bikes?

While nothing the MOCO does/does not do would surprise me, I would be REALLY surprised if they stuck a 10 year old battery in a 2010 bike on the factory line.  Your dealer?  That's a different story.  Either way, I'd be raising hell if it's a year '99 or '00 battery in my newish bike.  Somebody screwed up, and I sure wounldn't eat somebody else's mistake if I could avoid it.

If memory serves me, which is highly suspect, you've had some "issues" with this dealer previously, so my first thought would be that the dealer screwed up.  Especially if there was mud on the battery...you don't ride your bike in Motocross do you?   :huepfenlol2:

I don't have an answer.

Either the dealer mistakenly put the old battery in when the engine was out, or someone in the parts/service area needed a newer battery and figured he would change it out (when the motor was out) and you would never know the difference.

If your relationship is very good with the dealer, go in and tell them your story.

You've had way too many problems with this bike.

Keep us posted.

That would be a great question for MOCO. I would say absolutely not.

Well I just spoke with the new service manager on this and he explained that before he started at Tucson Harley they used to take batteries out of bikes and put them all on one table without marking them and that they oviously grabbed the wrong one when they went to put BLUU back together. Since he has been there they have changed the old way/practice and mark all batteries with customer name and bike. I just cant believe we are in the dark ages still!! Oh compensation is in works!!

Dessertbear54, Good for you glad to hear you are being compensated for your battery. When I went to get  a new rear tire for my 09 (it had about 13,000 miles on it probably could have gone another 1500-2000) the kid that was writing the service order  said too bad it didn't have a screw or nail it it and I could get a new tire under warranty. Then he said if I was to come back another day with a screw in it he would forget about my first visit. I didn't do it because of the whole Karma thing, but it just goes to show the difference in the way dealerships are run. Naturally I won't say what dealership I went to, but there are 3 within a reasonable distance from where  I live. CAHDBIKER
