110 motor paint flaking off
« on: April 09, 2012, 07:48:19 AM »

Hi guys,
Does anyone know if you can buy a touch up for the grey '09
110 cu motor?.. It's flaked and chipped all around the oil filter area
And up to the base of the front cylinder!... How poor is that??...
Especially as my bike isnt quite 3yrs old yet!
Obviously as this is now out of warranty the dealer won't care,
So I wondered if anyone knew where I could source some paint to touch it in?
Thanks for any ideas

I have a bit of paint flaking around the cylinder fins of the rear cylinder. Not enough to bother me yet, but I will enquire about the touch up paint.  I think if it got allot worse I would be calling Harley Canada ( in my case ) and complaining bitterly until I got some resolution.  Have to make HD stand behind there product.  I had a 2008 road king before my ultra. The RK  developed a leaky gas tank!!!  Way past it's warranty. Dealer told me to call HD Canada. So I did. And guess what, HD covered the cost and install of the new tank. I did have to pay a deductable of $100.00  I thought that was fair and walked away very satisfied. Worth a try. Cheers.

Even Sumax, one of the largest motorcycle powder coating facilities, has told ud that particular paint does not adhere correctly to the metal(s) they have attempted to apply it to.

Something I saved from earlier posts. For reference only.

Repair Process from HDMC:

How to Repair Case Paint
Damaged crankcase or transmission paint may leave a bare spot of aluminum that ruins the overall looks of the powertrain. At the Motor Company’s 2001 New Model Announcement the Customer Service department demonstrated a simple procedure for repairing case paint in the field. For those of you who missed this valuable demonstration, this “How To” article is provided.
Tools & Supplies
You’ll need some basic tools to complete this repair procedure.
• Scraper
• 100 & 180 grit sandpaper
• Harley-Davidson Texture Black paint (P/N 98606-BF), Silver Bead Blast paint (P/N 98606-BY), Granite High Temp (P/N 98606CTN – ’08-later CVO) or Medium Gray High Temp (P/N 98606CPM – 1200N)
• Newspaper
• Heat gun
Step 1
Scrape off any loose paint from the damaged area
Step 2
Sand the aluminum with 100-grit sandpaper and feather the edge of the paint with 180-grit sandpaper
Step 3
Create a funnel with a newspaper to direct the lightest possible spray of the appropriate paint to the damaged area. (Note: Remember to paint in a properly ventilated area.)
Step 4
Use a heat gun to dry, not bake the paint. Repeat steps 3 and 4 several times to create a seamless repair. (Note: Please follow instructions
and warnings for heat gun use.)

Harley had a ton of problems with the granite cases back in '09 if I remember correctly.  Not sure if they ever admitted what the problem really was, poor surface prep or poor formulation of the coating.  Anyhow, even if it's out of warranty I'd still spend a dime on a phone call to the mothership to ask for assistance.  Somewhere along the line the MoCo needs to learn to step up and take care of their screw ups.

 :2vrolijk_21: cheers Jerry,
Spoke to the dealer who did admit that every granite 110 cvo
Motor they had supplied had some kind of flaking issues!..
However, he also stuck by the policy that if it's over 2 yrs old
It's out of warranty!... So thanks to your help with the part number
I've ordered a rattle can and will be spending next weekend
Rectifying the problem myself!
thanks for your help

Dealers statement above is reason to contact MoCo directly at Customer Service 414-343-4056. They still may be able to do something for you and is at least worth a try before you try something and they say "what you did voids any assistance they may have been able to offer". :nixweiss:

FWIW I have an 09 FLTRSE3 and was just out of warranty and got it covered!  Bike went in for a touch up paint job which didn't match up good and MOCO sent them a Complete new motor!!!  Make The Call to the Factory and save that rattle can to custom paint up some Finned head bolt bridges.  :2vrolijk_21:
