Unusual Engine Sound
« on: April 10, 2012, 06:11:48 PM »

Under full throttle I hear what sounds like marbles coming from the engine area.  Bike has 10500 mi.  Its only under full throttle and seems to start around 3500 rpm.  Bike runs great, just the noise.  Any ideas?  I know my 88 ci never sounded like this.

Hide the exact same noise 2500 to 3000 rpm.  Its ping / detonation which means lots of water in the gas tank.  Had to drain tank and clean out whole entire fuel injection system.

Detonation (ping), and it can be caused by several things.  First is a bad load of fuel, or lower than specified octane fuel.  Make sure you're running fresh 91 octane or better.  Second, carbon buildup in the combustion chambers can also contribute to preignition and detonation.  Third, partially clogged injectors or intake air leaks that lean out the mixture.  And of course if the tune was recently changed, you could have a bad tune.

Has the bike always done this, or is it a brand new noise that just started suddenly?

I get a little noise like a rattle when I cruise at 75 mph. Sounds a little like bottles rattling. Does that sound like yours. Was going to get mine looked at at the 5000 mile service

I was getting pinging sometimes.  Figured out it was only when I filled at one particular station near the house.  Quit going there and the pinging has not returned.

Oh yeah, except one other time when I had no choice but to gas up here...

I have only had for about 1500 mi and its always done it.  I always get gas at the same place and will try switching.  It has been tuned, but it may be time for a new/better tune.  In brief, its either the gas or tune I think.

if the gas doesn't fix it it's the tune. I just installed a Daytona Twin Tec TCFI4, it mentions pinging in the setup.

sixgun95, my 09SEUC used to make a noise like that when it was new. Especially when under a load or if it was really hot outside. Even worse on non California gas. I made one vacation on it to Wyoming  and upon my return I put a Fulsac stage one map, open air cleaner, got rid of cat, changed out to 1.75 fulsac  baffles. That immediately cured the pinging, which sounds like what you have.  I still have noise between 2200-3000 RPM so that is either piston slap or valve train noise. However, at idle, hot or cold, it is just as quiet as my 80 inch evo was. Good Luck. CAHDBIKER
