I'm transferring everything from a wrecked frame to a new frame. Does anyone have any good ideas on the easiest way to remove the motor/tranny/primary as a unit and get it installed in the new frame? I've heard laying it on its side and lifting the frame off the motor then dropping the new frame on the motor unit. Is that the easy way or some other way? Which side will the complete unit come out of? Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

If it were me, I'd separate the trans from the motor and remove/install then individually.  With the bike upright on a bike lift, it's fairly simple if you're mechanically inclined.  You'll want to remove the motor out the right side of the bike...

I've done about 10 engine swaps/installs and never tried with the engine tranny attached, in fact I've never heard of it done. It certainly would be a major PITA if possible..     I have heard stories of laying the big on its side  :huepfenjump3: and few others. ,,, trust me,, pick the dam motor up and placer her in,, it's easy,,,,  :2vrolijk_21: if you feel you need a second hand, ask someone to help, but I think you'll find more hands just get in the way.

the last time I looked, the complete motor/ transmission weighs right around the 200lb mark. On my bike the motor can ONLY come out on the right side. I would separate the tranny from the engine (4 bolts), a lot easier to handle, 5 minutes more work to reinstall, JMHO twinotter

I only tore an old FLH apart, and did remove it that way as I was waiting for a new frame and didnt want to lose parts while waiting.

In retrospect, there wasnt much to lose, and I should have separated everything, because moving engine/trans/primary around by yourself is a royal PITA

I'd never tried it with a Twin Cam but had occasion to try this past winter.  Didn't think it would fit but was curious so gave it a try.  Despite contortionism, hydraulic aids, excessive language, long levers and beer the assembly would not fit.  Do yourself a favor.  Say "phukk it" now while you're in a good mood rather than later after you've jeopardized scratching or breaking something.  Then take the extra time that's not been wasted in the effort and have another beer.

OK, just an update, after disconnecting wiring, etc, me and 3 other guys lifted the whole unit out of the old frame, layed it on the right side on a stand, and put the new frame on the motor/tranny unit in just over 30 minutes. Went very smooth and no scratches at all. Will probably have it buttoned up by this weekend. Seemed like we needed to try since the motor/tranny/primary only had 1200 miles on it and didn't really want to have to tear it apart and put it all together again. It was so easy would definitely do it the same way next time. Thanks for all the responses.
