In July, we are going to follow Route 66 to where it ends in Chicago, know we will spend alot of time on the highways that have replaced it, but am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on stops we should try to make along the way. We are going to leave from the Frontier Restaurant in Alb NM, and take 40 out. (We actually will be starting the trip from Grand Junction, CO to Ft. Collins, CO then down to Alb, NM) From there it is pretty much free lancing it with the maps I have found on line. Once we hit Chicago, we plan on going up to the Harley Museum in Milwaukee, and from there will just wing it. We are getting some AirHawk air seats to help us out, and figure it will total about 5000 miles.
If anyone has taken the Route 66 section of this trip, any advice on where you can actually ride 66 without tearing up your bike, and where we should definately avoid would save us some "back tracking" I am sure.
Thanks

Why take the easy road?  I prefer to come
to a stop slidin' in sidways, hangin' on
for dear life, just so I am able to say;
"Man what a ride!"

Did the whole route A few years ago, get yourself A good map showing the old road. We had one that made it easy to stay on the old parts and gave you exit numbers where to get on and off when you did have to get on the interstate. As far as where to stop, just take your time and visit with the old timers you may find along the way. People and places are dissapearing so enjoy it while it's still there. You can always PM me if you want any specific Info.

This is not exactly on your described route since your going on down to Albuquerque but in case you wander a bit....

On my way back home from Austin, Tx to Denver last month, I decided to take the scenic route from Boise City, OK west to Raton, NM. It's called Dry Cimarron Scenic Byway rte 72/456, about a 100 mile stretch in the northeast corner of NM.  What a beautiful ride on top of mesa, no houses or caters, nice road, wondered why it wasn't more travelled ::).

About 50 miles into it road turned to poorly maintained 17 mile stretch of dirt.  Loaded down on the bike, I had to back track about 80 miles.

Enjoy your travels
