2011ultra roadglide spotlight kit from Headwinds
« on: May 10, 2012, 09:31:04 AM »

I own a 2011 Ultra Roadglide. I also have purchased the Mariah Rocket Spot light kit. Has anyone installed one? I would like to power it to the accessory switch... but don't necessarily want to run wires under the tank and under the seat. Can I plug it into the accessory switch itself? Or is there something better under the fairing I can tap into?

Do you have an available opening for an additional switch in the fairing cap?
If so I would get and install a "spot" switch.

I'd also look into the new harness available that allows independent control of the spots (not wired with hi/low beam switch).

just my thoughts ....

It has a switch console with a spare called accessaries (acc). The factory spare plug is under the seat. I would really like not to pull the tank just to run 2 wires back down under the seat... so it can power the lights up under the fairing.

I'm looking for a better idea.. not to pull the tank (or lift the tank)... and not run wires down under the seat so it can operate lights in the fairing.

Talk to wachuko , he did an awesome installation of the headwings on his 2012 roadglide. He also has a thread in here somewhere with pictures and a lot of details. :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

You can also call Joel who owns Headwinds.  Dealt with him several times and saw him recently at the Grand National Roadster Show.  I'm sure he'd be helpful.   :2vrolijk_21:

Having the same bike I can answer this. Nope, 4 switches from L to R. speakers, power locks, cruise and accessory.

Hmmmm ... maybe replace the cruze switch with one from an Ultra?
Don't they have a "combo" switch (cruze/speaker I think)?

Then replace the dedicated speaker switch to be a spot switch.
That's just what I would do.

The only issue I see with using the accessory plug is:

What if you eventually get a heated seat? You may want your lights on and your seat (Accessory plug) off. Or vice-versa.
Just me ... I would mirror a CVO Ultra Classic at this point for switches if you're adding spots.

Not sure about the newer ones but my 02 EGU had dedicated switches for the speakers and cruise also. The speaker switch has 3 different positions due to the cb/intercom setup.

My 11SERGU may be a little different from what others have posted about but I don't think so. The PO was anal about his bikes. More money than he knew what to do with (traded this one in on a metric after figuring it wasn't the bike for him and I got it for 30k with only 1100 miles on it so he took a hit somewhere) leading me to believe the wiring wasn't messed with and riding home in the cold the other night my heated seats were on without the acc switch on the dash being lit up. Maybe it's different or maybe the seats aren't wired through there. I haven't pulled my seat to verify or read the owners manual to see what it says there either.
I just got up and wanted to follow up on this with my observations.

Whenever I add spots to mine I know I will be wiring it through that switch though. I just like the thought of having a clean install. A way to avoid that is to use a relay to trigger the lights to come one with an ignition switched acc. But then again, you're still running wires to the battery to power the lights to prevent overload on another circuit.

SERGU has the heated Hammock seat as standard equipment.  Front and rear switches on the left side.  They operate independently of any fairing switches so ACC arrives unused from the factory.

Pulling the tank to run wires is no big deal.  Step one, buy the service manual.  It's pretty simple from that point.  Just remember to do it with a nearly empty tank.
