removing ecm on se road king
« on: May 11, 2012, 07:17:58 AM »

Im looking for advice here , went to remove the ecm yesterday one of the bolts holding it in wont come out. The pressed in thread just spins, any advice on getting this seemingly pressed in thread piece out ? Thought of carefully grinding the head of the hex bolt off to get the ecm out of the way, beyond that im at a loss.

The ECM caddy (that's the piece the threaded insert is installed in) is cheap; about $15.  It's also just plastic.

If the insert spins take the whole caddy off the bike then take a Dremel to it.  Cut it up as needed so you can put a pair of vise grips on the threaded insert.

The goo HD puts on the threads sometimes won't release without some heat, and there is no easy way to apply it there.  Put a 3/16" allen socket on your favorite electric drill or light impact wrench and start spinning it counterclockwise.  As the brass insert spins in the plastic it will generate the heat needed to release the goo and out the bolt will come from the brass insert.  Might take up to 30 seconds or so to get it out, but never had it not work.  Part can 9 times out of 10 still be used when you're done, but if not, correct, the caddies are cheap - but you'll probably have to order one and no one wants to wait!  Good luck.

If the insert will come out cleanly with the bolt have re-glued them back in a couple times also.

The ECM caddy is a cheap plastic part.  I was very surprised at the low price.  Had the same thing happen on a 2004 FLHRCI.
