Ignition issue
« on: June 06, 2012, 02:40:20 PM »

I hope someone can point me in the right direction on this.  I have an issue with my ignition.  I don't know if it is a wire or the whole switch going out.  I turn on the bike and the fuel pump cycles through but it won't start hitting the start button sometimes.  I tap the ignition switch sometimes and it turns over hitting the start button.  Other times I have to turn it on and off several times before kicking over.  Can someone help?

What year/model do you have.  Issues like that will be covered by warranty if still under time limit.

Does it click when you hit the start button?

Does the engine turn over at all?

Try this:
Once you get it to start leave the ignition on and hit the kill switch on handlebar to turn it off.  With ignition still on hit the start button.  Try it a few times.  Does it reliably start until you have cycled the ignition switch to off?  If so my guess would be the ignition switch.  If not then the start button or kill switch contacts may be going out.

If can tap the ignition switch and get it to work then I would look there first, especially if you have the run/stop (kill) switch on the whole time.

Invest in a service manual (+/- $50) for your year & model.  There's a trouble shooting guide for that very problem.  Mine turned out to be a battery with enough volts but lacking in amps.

I would start with cleaning battery cables at both ends (battery and and starter for pos. and engine for ground).  Even if the look clean, take then apart, clean and apply die-electric grease.  Next, if the battery the battery is more than 3yrs then I would replace.  You can get a Deka (same manufacturer as OEM) for less than $100 shipped on Ebay.

I was told to keep cables clean and not use dielectric grease. The reason being over time dirt builds up on the grease and causes resistance in the circut.

I have a 07 SERK and it has to be the ignition switch.  I wouldn't think it has to be the battery it is 8 months old. I hit (tap) it on the top a few times and it turns over.   Looks like I have to check for a short or loose cable this weekend.  Thanks for the tips.

Got to be the switch but checking the connectors wouldn't hurt.  May be a bit of corrosion or dirt making for an intermittent contact.  Clean all the connectors with a spray electronic cleaner let dry and reconnect.  If that fails you'll need a new ignition switch.  I bought one for my 03 electraglide and never used it.  If it is the same one you can buy mine but you'll have to check the fitment.

If you are interested I'll find mine in the garage and get the part number.
