FLHTCUSE6 Different seat? or different bars?
« on: May 25, 2012, 11:06:54 PM »

I have a 2011.5 FLHTCUSE6, which came with the dual heated hammock seat.  It is comfortable for both of us, but after comparing it to regular Electra Glide Ultra seats, I've realized that the hammock seat sits higher and places me farther back.  Sitting on a regular Electra Glide Ultra seat, I sit lower and slightly forward.  Not as much forward as the lower/reach seat that Harley offers, but more forward than the hammock does.  At first I was considering changing bars to Wild 1 575's, but someone asked me if I had considered changing seats.  I'm thinking now that if I had the regular Electra Glide Ultra seat, instead of the hammock seat, I might be forward enough that I don't need to change bars.  Another reason to move myself forward slightly, when my wife is with me and her floorboards are down, they are right at my calves when stopped.  Sitting on a regular Electra Glide, the floorboards are about 2" behind my calves, because I'm sitting farther forward.  I haven't been able to ride a regular Electra Glide w/o hammock for a long ride to see the stock seat and bars fit me better.

I'm thinking about trying a stock seat from a 2011 or 2012 in place of my hammock seat for a while.  Comfort for my wife is also important, so if the stock seat isn't as good for her as the hammock, then I'm back to looking at bars, and living with sitting higher and farther back.

By the way, I'm 6'-0" w/34" inseam, so I'm not short, but I am far enough back on the hammock seat to 1) need different bars, or 2) move my seating position slightly forward.

I've searched and read everything on this forum on seats and bars, and I still don't have a solution.

Anyone have a 2011 or 2012 regular Electra Glide seat they're not using?  I've looked on ebay the last few days and haven't found a stock Electra Glide seat.

Thanks,
Joe

Are you using the backrest?  If not that might help.  The mounting bracket for the backrest has three positions and I moved mine to the forwardmost.  Also the backrest has several positions (slots in the bracket) that it can be mounted in.  The topmost slot puts the backrest a little more forward.  You might try these ideas and see if they help.

I did change out the bars on my cuse7 to the WO575s since I wanted them to come back just a little.  And they look so, so good on the bike.

As far as the passenger footboards are concerned - they hit you leg because they are much farther forward than on non-CVO ultra classic.  This is because the boards on the CVOs have adjustment.  I have had that problem on all four of the CVO bikes I have had.  I don't think changing the seat will offer much (if any) improvement here.

Joe, try swapping out each passenger floor board from one side to the other, stem and all.  My
BSR loves it.  I thought it would be to far back and she would not like it.  But she is more comfortable
and I sure am.  No more stabs in the back of the calf wich is great for a 5'10" frame and 30" inseam.
Try it you have nothing to lose.  couple min. job.

Ultrafxr & Bucknut,

Thanks for your comments!!

I had tried the backrest in the three vertical positions, and changing the adjustment screw for tilt/angle, and I didn't care for any of it.  As I hadn't ever had the seat off, I didn't know that the bracket under the seat also had adjustment.  Did that today; moved the underseat bracket to the most forward position, now I'll try the backrest again.  Did a short ride today with the backrest in the middle vertical position.  I think it may help.

Ultra, when you installed the WO 575's, did you have to replace brake hose or clutch hose?  I'm still interested in the 575's.

Bucknut, I did swap the floorboard stems.  Thanks for the idea.  The wife sat on it, she thinks she will be OK.  We'll see on our next ride.  When I swapped the brackets/stems side for side, I kept the floorboards on the correct side for pattern.  I definitely have more room when I have my feet on the ground for backing.

Thanks again!

Ride safe,
Joe

Hey Wideglide, I just finished installing 575's last weekend I only had to buy a longer Clutch cable. I had already changed seat to a Sundowner and now I am in a really relaxed position went for a 250 mile ride and no neck and shoulder pain it was a great addition with them being wider you just feel more in control.

Hey John,

That's encouraging news, that you are now comfortable!  Awesome!

My clutch is hydraulic rather than cable, so I was trying to figure out if I need a longer line.  Maybe not?!?!?

Some time this summer I'm probably gonna do the 575's.  Next couple of months are busy, so it'll be a while yet.

Ride Safe,
Joe
