Re-Tuning if Installing just Slip-On Mufflers
« on: June 03, 2012, 07:57:22 PM »

I thought I'd better ask before trying it.... I just hit the 500 mile break in on my '12 SESG and can't stand the quietness any further. Would it hurt to add some Vance and Hines HO Monster Rounds slip-ons without having the bike re-tuned? My plan is to have duals added in the future, just not in the budget at this point.

If that is the only change, I'd suspect the stock adaptive fuel system could handle it without a problem.  It won't be an optimum solution of course, but it won't break anything either.  Once you change out the headpipe and eliminate the catalytic converter, if that's what you plan for the future, then I would definitely get it tuned properly at that time.  As far as that goes, a good tune is beneficial if you leave the rest of the bike totally stock IMHO.

You would think this “should” work. A friend of mine just purchased a 2012 CVO Road Glide and had V&H High Output added before it was taken off the lot. So far it coughs and spits out the air cleaner and stalls a low speed. Either something else is wrong or it just is not correcting…
Not saying this is the issue because we don’t know for sure yet. May put the stock mufflers on to see if it settles down.

I would plan to have the AFR sampled after the install and a couple hundred miles.  It’s also a good idea to have the sample taken in front of the CAT, just placing the probe the tail pipe will be sampling after the CAT unless it has been removed.

I agree with YHO.  The stock calibration is set for all conditions that can occur within the window of tolerances with which the engines leave the factory.  As we all know all too well, that window is getting ever wider.  If a person leaves their bike totally stock, chances are very good that they'll see a better-running engine if they can get their VE tables fine-tuned to their exact combination of parts.

Changing even just the mufflers behind the headpipe catalyst might work fine, but it also might push the envelope a little too much.  The Adaptive Fueling routines work best when they start centered everywhere in their range of operation.  They're much too coarsely laid out over the operating range to function well in terms of adapting to changes in breathing equipment.
