2012 CVO Ultra- Seem to have lost fork stop full left.
« on: August 09, 2012, 10:56:30 AM »

I've seen some posts about the fairing switch cap contacting the tanks on some of these bikes.  Mine did not do this, however recently out of the blue it started.  So now it does and there's no sign of a fork stop before it makes contact, and I need to be very careful about turning the bars too far left.

I also noticed that the screw on the that side of the switch cap had fallen out and there was a small black electrical module of some kind hanging down slightly from beneath the switch cap on that side.  That wasn't there before.  It looks almost like it may have had 2 sided tape and was stuck to something up inside.  Any idea what this is?  I'll have this issue addressed at my 5K service.

I assume what you are seeing is a small module that is part of the circuit for the combination spot lamp/cruise control switch (see attachment).  I also assume that the reason your fairing cap is hitting the tank now is due to the loss of that screw.  Don't wait until your next service visit, stop by the dealer and have them replace the screw.  And I think you're right, that module should be adhered to the fairing cap with double sided tape.  The dealer should be able to handle it very easily while you wait, since it's about a five minute job max.

I have the same cvo and just noticed that my fairing is rubbing my tank on both sides and the screws are in place, the dealer said they had to call the factory and would let me know what their plan to repair it would be.  :(  :(

Jerry I think you're right about that module.  I actually did replace that screw and yeah it still makes contact with the tank (left side only, right side is fine).  Something seems amiss with the fork stop, it still may be there, but I can't turn the bars any more without contacting the tanks to find out.  This all started in the last week, before that everything was fine.  I dunno maybe the screw falling out on that side was just a coincidence?  Its always something.  On the bright side my tank badges havent fallen off and my voltage regulator hasn't crapped out - yet.

Probably two strategically located dents in the tank to keep the fairing cap from making contact, made with a scientifically designed tool (padded five pound hammer). ;)

Seriously, I would imagine they will need to check the fairing brackets for correct location, then the attachment of the inner fairing to those brackets.  There may also be a small amount of fore/aft movement available in the tank to frame mounts.  Others have reported the same problem with contact even though the fairing cap screws were in place.  Once they figure yours out, closely inspect the paint for damage and insist they take care of it under warranty as well.

On mine, they did both, moving the entire fairing forward on the brackets and also moving the tank backwards.  Seems weird they're having problems with the CVOs.  There's nothing CVO about the parts involved, other than a few mils of paint on the switch cap.
