Well, if Boatman gets a gauge that actually the matches the rest of the spun aluminum set, I'll take back what I said above, hope that this is a chronic defect, and look forward to mine failing shortly.

Glad you got things going again.  But the wire nuts... you'd be better off using crimp connectors, or better yet, solder joints.  Wire nuts are bad on boats and bikes. Don't ask how I know :-[
