What oil temps have you been seeing and under what riding conditions do you see them? Where is the temps you have been seeing come from, fairing mounted gauge or directly from the oil sump from a dip stick gauge?

What temperature are you talking about, actual engine (head) temperature or oil temperature, and how are you measuring it?

Normal oil temperature for a Twin Cam engine is around 230°F measured in the oil tank with the ambient temperature around 70°F, but it will vary pretty widely depending on how much air is flowing over the engine and oil cooler.  It's not uncommon to see oil temps get up in the 260-300°F range under less than ideal conditions; this is one excellent reason for using a good synthetic motor oil.

On an 80-90 degree day my oil temp can reach 340 degrees in stop and go traffic.

I have been running across the mid west on my way to Californina.
the temps running across the plains and the dessert have been 105 to 110.
I have been monitoring the oil temp and running my scoot at 80-85 mph,  the oil averaged 280 or so.
On the open rd when I push the girl, to about 95-100 mph she runs about 290.

I am stoked about how this bike rides and handles! In 4 months I have put 8500 miles on it!

Cheers

Cheers on the feed back feel better temp has got in to 298 thought something was going on had air deflectors full tilt.I was going to go to the dealers have them check it out. It would have cost a few pound. Cheers again for all the input.  I can have a  much happier ride now with out constant temp worry. :pineapple: :pepper:

I find this is amazing, as I freak out when my oil temp gets over 250 degrees read at the oil tank even on a hot day in the California Freeway traffic. Now I finding this is the norm and not the exception......

In my opinion, any oil temps over 230 is NOT normal! These new HD are set so lean at the factory to meet emissions, with cams designed only to meet the current standards, they can only run extremely hot.
The problem as I see it is not necessarily the oil temps, but the extrem cylinder head temps that result from the lean burn and emission cams.  Head temp at 300 oil temp will be over 500 in worst case, no oil will save you valves/ springs/ rockers under these conditions. Your engine simply won't live long under these conditions.
It rediculous that HD has to bend to these stupid emission standards, but have decided not to argue with mob mentality of US govn't.
Anything that must be done to lower oil temps to reasonable levels will ultimately make the engine last far longer.
Alterations to the exhaust (get rid of the cat), a free breathing air filter, and most importantly, installing a solid tuner and getting it professionally retuned can solve 99% of the issues. A proper sized oil cooler will defintely help too!
