V&H Monster Oval 2007 SERK
« on: August 03, 2012, 01:51:04 PM »

Hey guys, the wife just bought me a set of Hi Output V&H Monster Ovals for my SERK. I have read a lot of posts on this site reference re-mapping and race tuners and all that when putting on new pipes. I called Harley today and the salesman said I need a re-map when I install the exhaust. Talked to a service guy and he said the SERK already has a Stage 2 download and does not need any additional re-mapping or tuners when installing the pipes. I asked him about the bike heating up because of the lean fuel mixture and he said because the SERK has a Stage 2 download already, it will be fine. Can someone shed some light on this because it completely contradicts about 80% of the posts here about tuners and re-mapping.

I highly doubt there's a "stage two download" in your bike; you'll have the factory calibration for those factory parts.  If you change the pipes (the stuff between the cylinders and mufflers) then there's no way you'll not have to re-tune.  If you merely change the mufflers behind the catalyst in the stock pipes then you'll be fine without a re-tune if you want to go that route.  I probably wouldn't, because I understand the way the "adaptive fueling" in the ECM works.  It'll work to your advantage doing what you want to do but not as well as a custom ECM calibration (whether via a professional tune or a v-tune/smart-tune done at home).  It's best to have the ECM properly calibrated and let the adaptive bits do their intended thing based off that.  But like I said, you'll be fine and safe doing (only) what you're contemplating.

I called a second dealer and they told me the same thing. They told me that the SERK already comes with the "Stage 2 download" and there is no need to run a re-map or tuner to it. Wierd.

If you aren't changing the headpipe just switch out the slip-ons and see how runs.

It just occurred to me that this is a 2007 Touring bike you're talking about.  If you put freer-breathing mufflers on the "old" style headers it can/may cause problems with the rear O2 sensor getting bad readings which causes excessive fuel to the rear cylinder at times (largely in the areas you probably run the engine on a regular basis).  You'll want to choke down the inlet (engine end) of the left muffler to help alleviate this.  Don't worry, you'll still get plenty of the sound you want out of it.

What I said earlier about the catalyst in the stock pipes pertains to newer-than-2008 bikes.  Sorry.
