2007 CVO ultra classic Cltuch Problem
« on: August 13, 2012, 12:49:42 PM »

Just got back from Surgis. I had a problem with the clutch not disingaging while I was at Custer park. The bike was pretty hot from
putting around in traffic. But, the clutch handle developed slack to the point that the clutch would not disingage ( this is hydraulic too ).
I let it set for about 30 minutes and right back to normal never screwed up again. Now what? :nixweiss:

Have you ever changed the fluid?  If not, I'd suggest you do so and find the DOT 4 fluid with the highest boiling point you can.  It's quite possible that your fluid started to boil due to high temperatures (look at where the clutch line enters the right trans side cover, very near the exhaust system).  The boiling point of the fluid becomes lower over time, especially if moisture gets in the system.  This is the same phenomenon that affects brakes at very high temps.

You began to boil your clutch fluid...  At minimum, bleed your clutch at the master cylinder and at the slave cylinder (the fitting on the transmission side cover).  If it boiled at all, you have both air and condensation in the system.  Better yet, flush all of the old fluid out and replace with fresh, quality dot 4 brake fluid.  If you've never done this since the bike was new, it's past time to do so anyway...   :2vrolijk_21:

I have same year bike with the same problem. I just returned from 12 day trip to Idaho,Wyoming,Montana. I experienced the exact same issue three times. Always after climbing hard and slow on mountain passes. (Bear Tooth Pass for 1) I was with a friend that previously had a 2007 exactly like mine who had also experienced this problem and he told me just to let it cool off and it would be fine. 15-20 minutes later we were on our way. I don't really have anything new to add but just to let all know that this must be a common problem especially with the 2007 model year. My friend has owned the 2006,2007,2008,2010, and 2012 CVO ultras putting about 25,000 miles on each and has never had it happen to any of the other model years and he takes them all to the mountains. It happened to him twice in the Colorado mountains on his 2007. I had just had the Harley dealer replace my clutch and fluid before I made the trip. Maybe they didn't use good fluid.

I had this happen several years ago with my 07 SEUC.  I installed insulated sleeve tubing over the clutch hydraulic line where it runs near the exhaust - and have not had a re-occurance of the problem.   :2vrolijk_21:
