New pipes on '12 FLSTSE3, Will VIEDs be enough?
« on: September 18, 2012, 09:52:15 AM »

I have V&H Big Shot Staggered pipes on order.  I am currently running VIEDs set about half way to full rich on a stock 2012 CVO Softail.  I am wondering if I need (versus want) a new tuner/map when I ditch the cats and install the new pipes.  I can turn up the VIEDs to full, which is about 13.7:1 AFR.  Seems to me that should be sufficient to avoid a lean condition.  While the bike won't run as nice without a new map customized for this setup, I would like to put off spending another $500 to $600 for a tuner until next year.

Thoughts?

I put the Vance & Hines big shots staggered on my '12 FLSTSE3, love the sound, and I don't notice the engine noises as much now!! I went to the dealer to get a tuner and have it dyno'd and they told me they can do that but since it is a CVO it has a map that will compensate for the change in exhaust so I said I will ride it and see what I think. I have put about 500 miles on it since the exhaust and it runs good but it pops out the exhaust (lean) when shifting and backing off the throttle, the spark plugs look good and it runs better than it did with the stock exhaust. BUT I am getting a tuner and having it dyno'd this winter!!

PRStaples,

Since it is just a guess without imperical data to go from .... Take your bike down to a dyno and have a few pulls done to check your afr numbers at different ranges and you will find out how ill tuned your bike is and how far out it is.

My bet is you are going ot be dismayed at how badly it shows.
