street glide fairing on a 08 SERK
« on: August 31, 2012, 10:57:13 PM »

Hi I have an 08 SERK and i'm wanting to tackle installing a street glide fairing onto it this winter. Has anyone done this? and does anyone have a parts list that could help get me started. I am mostly worries about electrical and being able to find harnesses to do this job. I am only interested in this type of fairing as I love the dials and speakers on it, I h ave looked at after market ones like the dead center fairing and others but they do no tickle my fancy

I think this will be a great project as I still haven't seen one around

It is in no way an "add-on" job to your existing harnesses or instruments.  Putting an Street Glide/Electra Glide fairing on a Road King will require ditching the Road King main harness and going to the Glide's main harness instead.  That means all the instruments are in the dash.  So you'll lose the Road King speedometer and will need a dash from Street Glide or Electra Glide.  A few different styles to choose from there.

By the time you buy a main harness, dash, instruments, fairing, radio, speakers mounting hardware, headlight, windshield etc etc etc you're looking at a very expensive conversion.  Changing dashes on the tank might mean a new seat too; depending on the dash you choose.  It's not that this isn't a do-able task.  It is.  But to me it wouldn't be worthwhile.

By the time all the parts were bought, fairing painted to match the rest of the Road King and spent a lot of time making the conversion it's very likely you'd feel money and time ahead to have just sold the Road King and bought a Street Glide or Electra Glide.

There are a few options out there for aftermarket fairings.  The looks do vary a bit.  Might be worth doing the homework.  Personally I'd not put any fairing on a Road King.  Rather well defeats the look and feel of having the Road King.  But were I inclined to do so the only way the amount of work and expense necessary would be close to justified would be with a nice removable fairing.  The conversion to an OE Street Glide fairing with all the internals in place is just more hassle than its worth (at least to me).

The only way I see around 2lane's assesment is to maybe do a custom install.  This would use all the FLHT hardware on the front including the inner and outer fairing and related bracketry, but not install the FLHT guage array.  Maintain the FLHR tank speedo and fuel guage.  But you'd have to customize the inner fairing extensively.

FBI has a kit to illustate, but even this kit would utilize the FLHT guage set.

My initial thought would be to gut the entire inner fairing face, create an alluminum insert and mount a 2DIN stereo and maybe some extra speakers.

OK, that's not entirely true.  My initial thought would be to trade the FLHR on a FLHT or FLHX.

Good luck!

thanks for all the input everyone, I have mostly all the parts right now to make this happen as i've searched around auto wreckers and ebay for the best prices. Im from a small town up in northern canada so time to spend on my bike in the winter is well worth the fun and excitement of doing something new. When this is all said and done Ill post before and after cause its going to go way further than just a fairing I believe :)
