How do you take apart the Batwing faring to access radio
« on: October 09, 2012, 09:06:09 AM »

I am buying the Zumo GPS for my 12 bike and plan on installing it my self.  ZUMO 660, Faring Mount and cables to radio for sound.  What is the best way to remove the fairing?  I dont want to scratch or break any clips that I don't see.

You will need to add the audio from the front of the radio from the gps.

So it will need to plug into the aux input?  I thought it plugged in the back of the radio.

You can pull the radio out and send it in to have the aux port moved or you can just plug into it in the front. I just snake the wire along the bottom of the radio to the the aux port and using a popsickle stick push the wire under the radio so it doesnt show

I think if you plug the GPS into the Aux port you loose all the audio ( radio, IPOD Etc) when the GPS is on.

Correct, when you plug the GPS into the AUX port up front you need to select the AUX option on the radio to hear the GPS prompts through the speakers. You can upload and play music through the GPS which will play through the speaker system on the bike. The GPS will interupt the music with voice prompts when necessary.

Buy yourself a NIM and make a Y harness.  There are plenty of postings on the "how"

If you haven't already bought the 660, you might want to consider the 665. Comes standard with XM satelite antenna. The satelite radio on the bike is great. I have a 550 with the antenna mounted in the fairing and reception is excellent. Plug in the audio output to the auxilliary plug and XM plays through the audio system. Voice commands from the Zumo overide the radio.

Don't forget you need the Road Tech brand in order to use Harley's NIM. The Garmin brand will not!
