Help Installing New Mirror Housing for LED Fuel Guage
« on: November 06, 2012, 03:46:46 AM »

I had the mirror top of my LED fuel gauge fly off while riding last week so I ended needing to order the mirror guage assembly, but am having a hell of a time hooking it up. It looks like it should be plug and play, but as you can see from the pics there are three long wires coming off the new assembly thatwant to plug in somewhere down in the fuel tank, but I can't remove the guage housing becuase it appears to be stuck on with adhesive. Also, there are torx screws in there that don't actually seem to serve any purpose-when loosened they will slide some plastic piece around but that doesn't seem to do any good. I hope someone who has installed one of these flush mount LED guages can help me out. I have searched over the threads but can't seem to find a match to the problem I am having. I have read where some people have cut the wires, but then what do you connect them to? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

P.S  I seem to only be able to attach one picture.

To remove the old gauge, unplug from loom beneath left side of tank.
Take the plastic housing off on the end of wires.
Push down on centre of gauge and it should pop up.
Pull gauge out wires will follow.
Feed wires of new gauge into tank.
Fit plug to end of wires, follow instruction sheet for wire locations.
Plug into loom.
Secure wires so they do not rest on cylinder head.

Should be right to go from there.

I see where the wires exit underneath the tank, but I can't see where they go from there.  And what is the "loom"?
And when I removed the old gauge what was inside was a set of the three wires and a housing (see attached picture)

I see what you are trying to achieve now.
My instruction was for installing a new assembly.

With your new gauge, unplug the wires it came with and push the existing plug (shown in picture) straight into the new gauge.
You may need to loosen the wires from beneath the tank where they are secured by a small metal clip, pull the plug out so you can plug it into your gauge.
Be careful not to cut through the cover where it goes into the tube at the bottom of the tank.

What revision is the gauge, there may be some changes since I last installed one.

This is the second revision, and it looks like things are a little different- I have some ideas similar to yours about removing the wires from the new unit and just plugging in the new unit (theoretically should work), but I'm going to take it to the shop and have them do it to be safe (hopefully).
