It depends on the model of your bike. Later models are TBW (throttle by wire), earlier models are not.

bottom of this page is a drop down with all the part numbers and applications. Yours should be a 309-360

That's the big difference.  There is a basic ThunderMax that just replaces the stock ECM, and then there is what they call their Auto-Tune product which uses wide band oxygen sensors in the exhaust.  That's the version that runs nearly a grand.  If you really want that version for some reason, you can have bungs added to your pipes to accomodate the sensors.

The basic model is part number 309-340: ThunderMax EFI Module Only (Open Loop) $485.00

Do you have a tuner in your area that can tune with the Thundermax?  If not, I'd reconsider the purchase.  If you are getting the "Auto Tune" module, then you'll have to weld bungs in your headpipe (in the right location) for the wide band 02 sensors.  And even then, you are somewhat dependent on what base map Thundermax provides for you.  In other words, you can't just stick it on there and expect it to auto tune your engine...you are REPLACING your Delphi ECM with an aftermarket unit, and it must have a good base map as a starting point.

On an '05 bike, there are many options for tuning the stock ECM.  Step 1: Find a good tuner in your area (no small task).  Step 2: Use whichever product they are most comfortable with. Step 3: Hope they know WTF they are doing...see Step 1.

A couple years back I added the auto tune thundermax with a set of Bassani true duals that had the O2 bungs, love the set up, best the bike has ever run.  Plugged in a map they suggested, re-learned it a couple times after the install after a couple rides, really improved how it ran each time.

I'd suggest looking around, I found the Thundermax at a better price at a swap meet and the exhaust from a friend.
