Air filter mounting flang any ideas
« on: November 02, 2012, 07:31:50 PM »

I keep my bike polished & wax shined as im shore you all do by what I've seen. Well when when I'm done I look it over for what I've missed & every time I try to ignore it but it's like magnet that pulls my eyes to it..... saying look at me.....look at me. there it is right in the middle of the polished engine chrome is that god awful looking pot metal stud mount of the air breather  :smilie_daumenneg:.

Short of getting it chromed would any one out there have any suggestions as what to do with it so it will blend in & not be such an eye sore? :nixweiss:.
                                      All ideas welcome.

Thanks for the in put. I was kind of hopping not to have to fork out to a chrome backplate.  If any one out there has come up with a alternative way to overcome this eye sore on your on ride. Or I'll just have fork it out. One things for shore that's not going back on the way it is.

                             Cheers..

You could powder coat it.   :nixweiss:

Yup that is an option powder coating. Do ya think the paint would hold up to the engine heat transfer :nixweiss:.

Cheers for the feed back. I'll check out the powder coaters cost; H.D.'s chrome is no change from £50.00 pound note sterling around $120.oo U.S would that higher or lower of what u's would pay?.

MSRP in the USA is $54.95, which is pretty reasonable considering how much it would likely cost to have someone professionally prep and powder coat the original part.  If you're looking for the lowest cost option, I'd imagine that would be a do-it-yourself project involving some prep work and a rattle can of high temp paint in your choice of color.  It's not likely to look as good or hold up as long as the chrome version, but it is an option I've used over the years on many parts.  If you do the prep right, it should last at least a few seasons.

Good luck on the DIY.  If you prep correctly and use a good, high quality high temp paint should have no issues.  Also, you mentioned it was £50.00 for the chrome HD piece on your side of the pond.  That's about $79 bucks US (current exchange rate) so while it is a bit more it's not that far out of line if the painting doesn't work out to your liking.  I agree, by the way, that HD spent all that money on all that "extra" chrome on the CVO's and left this stock.  Go figure...

When you get it completed, make sure to post a couple pics of the final fix... :2vrolijk_21:

I normally quote the chrome but if the customer doesnt want that, I will typically shoot them with flat black header paint...I havent seen any issues and have been doing this for years  cost less than $10 and I paint several with 1 can...http://www.pepboys.com/product/details/9381728/338/
