Number Plate conversion?
« on: December 15, 2013, 12:50:54 PM »

My bike is currently in the Harley shop having the paint work rectified under warranty.  I had a paint blister appear on the back mud guard and it is having to be completely replaced.  I am wanting to have a side number plate fitted but have been informed that the bracket that holds the reflector and license plate is not something that just unbolts and I would have to take a saw to the bracket.

Does anybody know if this is the way forward?  Has anybody who has an export model changed to a side mounted plate.?

Take a look at this illustration first, it is bolt on and I don't believe you need to saw the bracket

Did the dealer tell you that ??

Real easy to get rid of that black....... Thing.... But the reflector cannot be mounted without it.

I used a Kuryakyn side plate holder and installed a LED strip to replace the brake light.  Looks great, but no more reflector.  I personally hate reflectors, but for security purpose, I think that I'll find a way to 'glue' it back next summer...   :-\

I spoke to the dealer again and when he said it's not something that just unbolt's he meant it's more involved than what i thought it was and that black thing was a bracket that supported the fender and would not recommend the removal  of it and this is why he suggested taking a saw to the bracket to remove the bit that sticks out from under the fender i hope this is a lot clearer now. So a new question dose the home market version have a different bracket or no bracket ?      :bananarock:       I take it that you guys from Canada have no bracket  :2vrolijk_21:

You need Harley part number 59500108.  That is the bracket without the part sticking out of the fender.

I've removed mine completely when I install the side plate. I've been meaning to order the domestic version but been slack. I've seen no issues without so far.

Vertical mounted license plates are illegal in North Carolina. Just gives law enforcement a reason to pull you over which is fine unless you've had a couple beers.

Same in Quebec and probably Canada too.  Did not verify though...

Take a small modeling paint brush and MEK and dab it on the double sided tape on the old license plate mount. Give it 10 min, and it will pull right off. Get a saw to remove the guy's head that suggested it. 8)
