Lets not be controversial, but lets talk about gun control
« on: December 16, 2012, 08:32:16 PM »

Just my opinion, I have a carry license in the State of Michigan, I got it in the spring of 2008.  I'm from Illinois, I always had guns, mainly for hunting, well, I had a Python too just for the fun of it.  Anyway, I was thinking about the carry law as Illinois is getting close to being legal.  It costs about $140 bucks for a 3 hour course which includes 30 minutes on a range.  Another $115 fee in Michigan for the background check and the permit.  You are legal to carry a loaded ready to fire weapon.  That's friking scary!  I take it pretty seriously, I try and spend a couple hours on the range every couple weeks, took some drawing and firing in one motion lessons.  GOD forbid I have to use it in an emergency situation, I want to make sure I'm accurate.  It was interesting, the guy I took the lessons from had a long list of credentials that left no doubt in my mind that this guy has lived it.  He laughed when I was shooting 25 ft away in a shooting position that i read as the way to practice.  He said in an emergency, you will pull the trigger until you clip is empty and you will still be pulling it your adrenline will be so high.  Your target will be moving towards you at a speed of about 6 mph, you wont have time to assume your stance and aim....too many movies, and burn the manuals.  I carry on my left side over my front pocket with an inside holster.  I'm right handed, he taught me to draw, right leg back and shoot in one motion with the target coming at me from 15 ft on the belt.  Pretty cool chit, hole lot different when your rushed.  The target got to me before I could draw for a while, after I was able to draw and shoot before it got to me, it took a lot of rounds before I actually had decent shots.  Now every time I go, thats all we do for about 20 clips.  My point.....you have to have classroom time, then so many hours behind the wheel to get a drivers license in Michigan.  It's crazy to think that so many people have their CCW that will probably get killed if they actually every have to draw their weapon in an emergency situation....likely may shoot themselves.  Doesn't it make sense to require more extensive training before you can actually carry a concealed weapon?  Maybe its different in other states?  I think that you should have to have X amount of documented time on the range, have to take a test on some of the laws on where you can carry, and every year you should have to pay a fee which would cover a fresh background check and take a range test to show that you can handle a weapon?  Just my thoughts, chit, someone checks out today, loses his job, spouse, whatever some sort of life changing event that gets the person to go off the deep end that maybe turns violent?  I don't know, it just seems too easy and loose?  I'm not going to get into the assault weapons side of the conversation.  I see both sides and both sides have strong arguments.  I'll let someone else tackle that one!
