Beware steering lock fault
« on: September 18, 2006, 03:20:42 PM »

I went for a ride yesterday then parked up in my garage without applying the steering lock. I did however turn my handlebars to the extreme left ready for locking.

When I came back to bike for another ride the steering was locked. The dealer (100 miles away) had experience this before on a Glide. As a breakdown firm cannot manouver a steering locked bike they had previously had to send a technician to repair in the owners garage. They couldn't do this for me due the mileage.

The solution

I removed the tank panel. I removed the ignition lock barrel by holding a feeler guage underneath it to depress the small pin and turning the key 15 degrees further to the left than it would normally go. The chrome lock barrel then pulls off. 2 screws allow you to remove the lower fairing inner. Then chissel the black plastic barrel to break it away from the 2 irremovable steel pins that hold it to the fork yoke. Bingo ... you can now turn the bars and roll it into the recovery vehicle.

I had a similar thing happen on my HDI '05 SEEG

It was partly my fault since I was removing the inner fairing switch cap and had the ignition lock knob out.

When I put it back in (following the procedure as per the workshop manual) the steering was locked and I couldn't unlock it

I took the tank off and managed to drill out the security pins (don't know if the Domestic models have this feature?) and replaced the whole lock unit. I used regular allen bolts instead of shear head security bolts on reassembly...

Cheers

I was at the dealer last week making appointments for he last items b4 MV and he mentioned the same thing about the pins falling into lock position and not being able to unlock. I think it was a recall item if I'm not mistaken.just funny you should post this as i just heard the same thing.  Later,Q

My understanding of the situation is that H-D went to the HDI switch & lock for '06 domestic models.  Shortly thereafter they issued the service bulletin/recall referenced above.  I haven't heard of this issue on previous model year domestic models - anyone with an '05 or earlier had this problem?

Tony, if memory serves me on this the assembly that had been in use internationally (but not for use production prior to 06) began to be used in US domestic production in 06.  So the problem that US bikes might have experienced beginning with the 06 models those of you with export models might have suffered through prior.

Tony, ever since I found out about the Monster Raving Loonies I admire the Brits even more than ever.  But I still got to wonder about taking pride in being the beta tester for a design goof   ;D !
