What to do?
« on: January 30, 2013, 04:06:25 PM »

One more question and its done. Since the 110SE already has SE255 cams, would the gain be enough to justify the cost going up to, lets say, a Feuling 574 Cam kit w/Hi volume oil pump......bout $1500 that I really don't have

Thanks for the help, guyz!!!

Well, I feel like its time and would like a little guidance. I have had a new SE compensator kit since last fall when I caught a NIB one on FleaBay for a steal. Its mostly winter in my neck, so I gonna put'er in. My scoot has 27K with a few 50K noises. Thinking about adding new lifters because of the horror stories, why not while its down? Pull the heads, might as well go with .30 cometic's. Don't really want to spend a ton as the scoot is stock except for a breather, supertrapps, x-pipe and a TTS map. What am I doing right/wrong and what kind of lifters should I do? And let me say GRC so it offically has his name on it. But there plenty of other motorheads on this site: twolane, hddude and anyone else that might want to help a very easily confused Brother. Thanks in advance!!!!!

JMHO of course, but considering all the problems that have been reported with lifter roller failures over the past few years I think it would be cheap insurance to install new lifters at 27k miles.  S&S would be my personal choice, but there are probably several brands that would be an improvement over the stock parts.

As for the head gasket change, unless you're planning a change to different cams I wouldn't do it.  Cylinder pressures are already quite high with the stock 255 cams and bumping compression a little more is unlikely to improve performance and could create a detonation problem.

How is the bike running right now?  If you aren't having any specific issues, I'd just do a good compression and leak down test to make sure the rings and valves are sealing properly.  If they are, I wouldn't bother tearing the top end down at all.

Thanks, I know just enough to screw things up. Scoot runing OK, pulls good through the gears. I can hear noises that my son can't hear, I guess cause its my wallet. Might just do that.....lifters & the 08a compensator, if everything else checks out. Will save some $$$$ that way.

my bike has esp still - the dealer says to just ignore it and change the lifters the last week the esp is good - OR to put in factory hd lifters so there are no esp problems if the thing blows up. but they really want me to just leave it alone.

it runs perfect, but i use it to go to work in the summer, so id rather do the work in march.

esp has already almost paid for itself - but i dont want a blown lifter - and i dont want to void the esp either.

???

exactly the right question - what do do.

and before anybody carps on how cheap i am... - i got the thing cash before the economy went to h&^% no way can i replace it  - and i ride it a LOT when i can. last time i got broke was in 81 - and i sold my 77 glide - took 19 years to get another one - in 15 years i probably wont be riding if im still on the right side of the grass.

I'm kinda at that point myself- 30,000 on the SERG and worry sometimes the more I read up and over analyze all the issues. My lifters are quiet though and she runs well- only issue is oil consumption... maybe 2 qts between oil changes- figure it needs a re-hone and re-ring since I've been told the 110's are notorious for poorly sealing rings.

I'm determined that if I'm going to open her up for any one thing, then I might as well do the headwork, re-hone/re-ring, lifters, cam bearings and the other top end stuff. Just trying to hold off in case it really isn't necessary.

Btw, how's your oil consumption?

Mine don't use any. Now I have only changed the oil bout 5 times. I did add 1/4 quart one time cause I had to check my oil cold just before a long ride. When we stopped 2hrs later, I checked it and it wasn't overfilled so I figured it was a pinch low. 2K
