I can tell ya what a $.80 snap ring CAN cost you!  I forgot to mention this mess took out my Darkhorse crank too.  Yeeks!

I've put 600 - 700 miles on her with the break in tune Bob put in her.  She doesn't have the catapult launch bottom end the 590 cam set up did but she's no dog either.  Thing is the power is every where in my riding zone.  I was out cruising on US 24 looked down to find I was cruising at 90 mph.

Mackie's 598 cams are sweet!  Nice power curve and like you say, the power's in the right place...    :2vrolijk_21:

(If my memory is tuned in today, I sold you those cams, right?)

You did buddy.  They run quiet & perform as advertise.  What more can you expect?

I tried a lot of combinations with the 590's but always got the same result.  A lot of low end torque but no top end.  These 598's seem to come on a bit later but run out much better.  A real world look at it, idle to 2500 rpm is only from a stop and I'm not there long.  Saddle time will tell.

Thanks for all the advise Scott!

Holy crap, not again!  I thought I had bad luck but you seem to be running well ahead of the pack.  I have to say you are one patient & resilient dude.  My 08 SERK with 61,500 miles is sitting on my Handy lift with a very high crank run out.  I removed the lifters and inspected the cam chest components and did a crank run out measurement.  The lifters looked nearly new, the tensioners need to be replaced but once I took the measurement I knew it was all over.  Not being in a good financial situation at this time & no reason to expect anything to improve I guess it will just sit there.  My HD riding days may be over as I just can't bring myself to spend anymore on HD products.  I hope your luck changes for the better, I think you are due.

Good Luck

Like Scott I'm a fan of the Mackie 598s.  Same experience as you're describing with them.  Have used them in four motors I can think of right now.  Two were at 10.25:1, one at about 10:1 and one up about 10.5.1.  The compression made a difference.  The cams noticeably liked a bit more compression.  Like you're seeing they still ran great at the slightly lower compression though.

Enjoy it buddy.  Maybe a little less stress in the engine will allow it to run a couple hundred thousand miles without issue (we all wish!).

We were shooting for the 10.5:1 area on the build.  Seems we missed.  My plan is to ride her.  She rode damn good before the tune.  Should feel better yet.  Sometimes I wonder how much money is spent because we can look at a dyno sheet vs just letting the ol seat of the pants tell you if all is well.  I know the dyno sheets have sucked me in more than once.  Thanks Don!

Be down sometime this year, we need to go for a ride.

Amen to that brother.  This spring needs all the rides it can get.  It's been a sucky winter with way too little free time.

Fortunately I never trusted or followed dyno sheets too much.  Had a good friend who ran one for many years and got to play on his equipment for my own use.  Saw how easy things could vary even if there was no intent to cause the variances; and if one were so inclined how easy it was to really alter reality.

Damn machines are just a comparison tool.  Only our asses tell us if we're happy though.  Or at least that's the way it should be :2vrolijk_21: .

After a complete tear down and clean up, I got a new crank for John @ Darkhorse.  They started the build from there.

I have one heck of a paper weight out in the garage too.
