Bad Speaker or Amp???
« on: August 18, 2016, 10:46:54 AM »

I need some advice...I had a saddlebag speaker go out on my 2013 Road glide custom while doing our 6500 mile road trip. It still works but breaks up bad when playing a song with a lot of bass. I'm not sure if it's the speaker or the amp. I think it was my fault due to having my AVC turned up to high and having my volume high to hear my tunes over my pipes doing 80 MPH over long periods of time.  Is there an easy way to diagnose which one it is without tearing both bags apart and swapping parts? If it does turn out to be the speaker, can anyone recommend a good pair of replacements for the bags? Harley dealership gave me a price of $165 just for one and I'm afraid the other one might take crap down the road.

Thanks For Any Help,

Dean

If it is only one of the speakers then the problem is very likely the speaker. If the end goes bad the speaker will cut out. If the speaker is bad, the sound will be garbled,  especially at low frequency.

Thanks for the reply Greg. I was leaning toward a bad speaker too. It sounds normal at half volume or less, but as soon as you play anything louder that has a lot of bass, it breaks up and cracks on every bass beat. Is there any way to do some sort of resistance check on that speaker?

Thanks,

Try plugging in another speaker. If you don't have an extra one to test, swap the speaker leads.  If the same speaker sounds bad, it's the speaker.  If the other then sounds bad, it's the amp.   ;)

I'll try to get the leads to reach from the opposite saddle bag speaker. If not I'll have to break the waterproof seal on both speakers and try swapping them to confirm.

Thanks for the help,

It sounds like a speaker is blown (no pun)
Rigging up a temporary jumper from the other speaker will be an easier way to troubleshoot...

A lot of people on here have upgraded to aftermarket speakers. You may find someone willing to sell/give you their moco speaker.

Confirmed today that I have a bad speaker. Tried to make a little temp harness but didn't have enough hands to hold everything in place and operate the radio so ended up tearing out the speaker in question and moving it over to the other bag to confirm...only took about 20 minutes after I figured out how it all came apart.

That's a great idea....I'll put a post in the wanted section if I don't hear from anybody on this post. I'm sure somebody has a pair collecting dust somewhere. I'd be willing to pay for them shipped to 19608 area code. Shoot me a PM if you have a pair to fit my 2013 Road Glide Custom saddlebags.

Thanks For Now,
