Anyone used a Lead Substitute in there fuel?
« on: April 09, 2013, 07:42:05 PM »

I have a 2007 SE Ultra without Converters. Would it help the engine in any way to add one of the lead substitutes to my fuel? Example would be Gunk Lead Substitute or Bardahl instead o Lead Gold. They claim to help valve recession. Designed for older cars that need leaded fuel, I just wondered if it would be beneficial to a Harley Motor without converters?

Thank you

How bad is the detonation issue you're trying to overcome and can't correct with a good tune?   I'm assuming there must be as there isn't any other reason to buy the stuff.

I purchased the lead substitute for a older car that I thought I would be buying. the deal fell apart and now I have the additive. I wondered if it would be good for my bike. it runs just fine

Short answer, no it won't help.  Longer answer, not only won't it help, it will leave deposits on plugs and elsewhere in the engine.  Modern engines with modern seats and valves don't need lead to prevent valve problems.  If they did, you wouldn't see the average auto engine go well over 100k miles without requiring a valve job.  They didn't do that well back in the days of leaded fuel.

Dispose of the stuff responsibly.

Thank you Jerry, I will keep the lead Substitute until I buy a old car. If I don't use it within a year or so, I will take your advice and dispose properly. I really appreciate your help

Your 2007 SE Ultra came with converters - in the front part of the mufflers themselves.  Have you changed the mufflers?
