Brake fluid shelf life (DOT5)
« on: April 15, 2013, 08:46:28 AM »

Hello all,

I have couple half full bottles of DOT 5 brake fluid left over from my brake job/new front master cylinder done 2 years ago.

I understand that Silicon fluid if left open absorbs water, sealed bottles are not problem but, what are most folks doing with left over closed bottles?

Thanks and ride safe!

I think you have it wrong.  (NON) Silicon brake fluid absorbs water/moisture...............Silicon type does not.

 ::)Moisture

 Other types of brake fluid absorb and attract moisture from the atmosphere. Over time, this moisture may cause your fluid to start boiling when you brake hard. This can cause your brakes to become damaged or even fail completely. Silicone brake fluid doesn't absorb water from the atmosphere, so your brake lines and seals will last much longer.

When in doubt, throw it out (OK, for our environmentally conscience folks...please take it to a disposal location that accepts fluids of this type instead of in the trash...now back to the regular scheduled thread... :2vrolijk_21:).

It's not that expensive and after sitting on the shelf for two years, buy some new fluid.  It will make ya feel better about using "old" fluid.  I write an "open on" date on any fluids and if they don't get used within 6 months or so, it's disposed of.  Got that advice from an old mechanic years ago.

By the way, roadrunner, really like your avatar of the MINI GP.  What number do you have?

Thanks all, I got the water issue wrong, water is incapable with DOT 5, it will just pools up and causes corrosion.

I usually put dates on fluids when I open them (HD DOT 5 is a black bottle), and I agree, dispose of (or reuse in a spray bottle for silicon spray).

GP is number 066, its the most fun on 4 wheels!

Wow, you got an early model.  Congrats...always loved the GP.  There are a couple running around the Oak Ridge area.  Agree...most fun on 4 wheels.
