Popping throught the Heavy breather?
« on: May 28, 2013, 01:36:55 AM »

Anyone get a pop through the air intake? Almost sounds like a backfire. Only happened 2x in 1000 miles.

Yup mine did it too. Just installed a fullsac stage one I think it is gone but will have to ride more miles to give a definitive answer. Before the tune I would say it did it 10 time in 600 miles.

It has been tuned already. Hopefully a simple fix!

:( 2011 CVO ROAD GLIDE ULTRA
HAS THIS PROBLEM SINCE NEW. 1600 MILES. It's in shop for 2 months waiting for parts/front wheel side swiped by a female in a hurry!!#/$×%.
Does this every time when it's cold. Also at other times for no reason. Two different shops---No popping noticed. I think timing is not retarded enough to compensate for slack in timing chain of the cams. Probably squeezing the oil out of the chain tensioners thus regarding the cams. Timing is taken from the crank shaft an steady at cranking speed. Then there is the compensator to think about.
I'm sure there are smarter folks who are smarter than me.
Let me know if you find a fix.

It's nothing new, Harley has had these issues for a very long time, ever since they were first required to meet basic emissions regs.  We had the same problems with the stock setups on carb bikes back in the 90's, and the problems got worse as the regs got tighter.  You might think modern EFI systems could handle it better, but unfortunately even EFI requires proper calibrations to run without all the drama.  The car folks got it right a long time ago, but Harley still hasn't come close.  I personally believe it's on purpose, to sell more SEPST's, because otherwise it just means they are really not very competent when it comes to standard calibrations.

Occassional misfires and backfires aren't right, but you won't get much help if that's all that happens.  If the bike actually stalls, then that is a safety related defect and you should raise holy hell.

A proper tune will get rid of the pop. I have used that AC a bunch with no problems.
