iPhone 5 - forget it.
« on: October 24, 2012, 09:33:11 PM »

I have an i5. Just got a genuine Apple Lightning- 30 pin adapter. Plugged into the iPod dock on my 2011 SESG AND nothing played. In fact, I couldn't even get it playing from the iPhone, let alone the handlebar controls. A real disappointment. Going to try ordering a Bluetooth dock to attach to iPod dock to see if I can connect via bluetooth. Not very optimistic.

description of both the $29 and $39 adapters on its online store, Apple clearly says "Video and iPod Out not supported."
The old 30-pin connector that Apple had been using on all iPods, iPads and iPhones since 2003 was able to send an analog signal out, which many cars, docks and other gadgets picked up to control the iPod and play music through their speakers. The new eight-prong Lightning adapter is all digital, converting the analog signal to digital you can not play analog music through it.
Some older speaker docks and cars will still be able to play music from an iPhone 5. But users won't be able to control their playlists through their car stereos or remote controls.

Do a Google search on iPhone Lightning Adapter compatibility and you will see it works on a lot of devices and not on some others. It should work in your case, at lesat to pass the audio. Handgrip controls may not work. The adapter actually has a D to A converter built in so that it will pass analog audio out to music devices. Be sure your mute is off as it defaults to "Mute on" when the adapter is connected. I wouldn't give up yet.

Also, take a look at this thread:

Looks like some others have gotten it to work.

Let us know if you get it to work. Lots of controversy over if it will or not. Have a friend in the same boat on Apple river with a broken paddle!

Did you have the opportunity to try the adapter on a different device?
Could be defective.
The Apple adapter works fine with the module we sell. Cant see that the Harley unit would be that much different.

I tried exactly that a couple weeks ago with my iPhone 5.  I have the Harley iPod setup and it worked just fine.
