Loud Backfire Sound When Starting Engine
« on: May 22, 2013, 04:33:02 PM »

:orange:  Sometimes I get a very loud backfire sound when starting my 2004 SEEG.  Doesn't matter if engine is hot or cold.  So loud it will startle friendly bystanders.  Also have some decel popping but nothing compared to the start-up sound.  Any idea what's causing this and if its harmful and what will stop it if advisable.  Bike has 103 SE engine, SERT, Rinehart true duals, Baker 6-Speed OD, 40,000 miles.  Second owner so not sure what's in the engine, but it runs very strong through all the gears.  Always run 93 octane fuel.  Thanks for advice.

Take some out of you crank to run time for the starting issue.

I just started having the same problem with mine about a month ago.  Only does it when its cold though.  But sounds like a shotgun going off.  When its warm like if you shut it off and try to start it again will pop or starter not turn.  Always had the hard warm starting problem on both my 103's.  Was fine till i put the tts on and could never get it to stop.

Proper tuning will help both of you.  The 2004/2005 CVO103's commonly had hot start issues and backfires through the air cleaner with the stock tune, and many/most canned maps or even custom tunes often failed to fix the problems because those maps didn't address those items.  Judicious adjustment of cranking fuel and timing should help.  As for popping on decel with aftermarket pipes, that's not unusual either.  Make sure there are no air leaks in the exhaust system, mufflers to pipes and pipes to heads.  If that checks out OK, once again a good tuner can take care of the problem.
