XM Radio question?
« on: July 03, 2013, 04:27:23 PM »

XM Radio question. All of sudden I’m getting poor XM reception. Is there a separate antenna for the XM receiver?

Thanks for any help.

Yes its mounted on a metal bracket in the fairing. You can try the connections to the radio or do like I and a bunch more have done and that is to locate it on the outside of the fairing with double sided tape. If you search the site you can see pic's of several options. Also the connecting wire between the XM module and radio go bad. You usually loose all when that happens.

I often have days where it works really well, and some days not so well. Driving through mountainous areas with over hanging trees really play havoc with reception. In city areas, building sometimes block reception. I love listening to XM, but when reception is flaky, I fire up the iPod.
FWIW, I notice the same issues in my SSR & Ram truck. Both have the antennas inside, either on the dash or under. The wife had a 2011 Grand Cherokee that had the antenna on the rear roof section. That had excellent reception. Just got a new Grand Cherokee, antenna mounted in the same spot, but a new design. Noticed this doesn't work as well as the 2011 GC. Go figure!

I have also notice the same problem sometimes as well what I have found is when you dismount your garman  there are 2 rows of shinney brass pins  I take a micro cloth and clean them and push the pins in to make sure there not sticking also use cloth to clean back of garman  as well

I don't think the Garmin has anything to do with XM reception. It's a separate antenna/module on my FLHTCUSE7.
