Cooling fans for CVO 110's
« on: June 08, 2013, 07:38:56 PM »

:soapbox:I was talking to a Honda Bling dealer (he was from Canada) at  Warrenbrug NY bike week  and he said he really liked my bike  ( Black/Orange CVO ultra ) he seen me park it and stopped me when I walked by two hours later . He said he was not trying to scare me but he  heard of problems with the 110 overheating some shutting down a couple of others complete motor failure . He suggested I invest in a cooling fan .He does not sell them he just wanted to pass along the info he has heard at other rallies . Just want to Know what other think or if others have them ?  Thanks In Advance  Dave :

Do a search for cooling fans. There's a lot of discussion on this topic.

Opinions differ, but I installed the Wards fans on my CUSE6. Are they needed?? I don't think they'll hurt anything by being on there and any increase in airflow across an air cooled engine's cylinder head is a good thing IMHO.

Have 91 K on my Altra 2009 CVO. Same motor, ride across country every summer. Cali to Ohio, then take the Southern route back through the desert. I ride all day and sleep at night. My bike never shut down. Arizona, Cali is very hot in Aug.

Fan's gotta blow that hot air somewhere, most of them blow it on your leg.

With the race tuner you should have your AFR set where it doesn't run too lean.  Use good oil and call it good. :2vrolijk_21:

Steve G is right.  With a proper dynotune, fuel management system (Power Commander, TTS, or SEPST) and catless headpipe you're fine.  In stock form they run too lean, which causes most of the heat issues.

All the fans in the world won't fix poor engineering and poor quality parts.  So anyone trying to sell a fan by citing all the engine failures Harley is famous (infamous) for doesn't exactly impress me.  Some of the early 110 failures could be directly connected to excessive rear head temps, but the temps were only the trigger and not the root cause.  Harley fixed those early problems not by adding fans or running the engine richer, they at least temporarily fixed them by changing some of the parts to something better.

Anyhow, adding thermostatically controlled cooling fans can't hurt anything and will likely help by keeping head temps closer to their optimum range.  Just don't assume that adding them will ensure your engine won't have failures, because it won't.

I put a set of Wards Werks on my 2013 Road King a month ago and can tell the difference in South Florida.  It doesn't shut down the rear cylinder if I sit in traffic and it seems to run better.  I went with the thermostatic option that controls the fan activation.  Also, I don't notice any blast of hot air on either leg when they are on and you really can't tell they are running unless you shut down the bike and they cycle on/off to cool it down.  All in all a good investment, just my two cents...

Installed wards werks fan on my 2012 cvo streetglide. Keeps engine cooler, does not go into heat management mode. Thermostat turns on fans automatically. When I tested in my garage, the fans came on, cooled the engine and shut back off while parked. It is a big difference riding in traffic, it blows warm air since the fans are on as opposed to the super hot air when you are overheating. Great product

I'm using Wards Werks fans on my FLHXSE3 with the thermo switch for automatic operation. It works superb for me

My son in-law just put a set of wards fans on his 103. Prior we had traveled  I 15 through Baker Ca. at 113 and his head temp hit 330 most of the run, mine hit 277 on one grade we pulled. now with the wards on his 103 he did a run last weekend, our temp was 116 here in Las Vegas and with the Wards he ran 275 tops. That was good for a cost of $275.  on my 110 the headers for Jackpot and the Vision plus Auto tuner and Woods 777 cams did the ticket, no fans but more money, yet a lot better power.  Fans less money, all the rest more money but added power.  You decide?   :confused5:
