Decel shake
« on: October 14, 2013, 01:25:04 PM »

I fianlly found out what you folks were griping about. About 90 I let off the throttle in a turn. Not a tank slapper, but a real wake up for a 54 year old rider. Meeting a semi, might have peed just a little bit.

If you chop the throttle on any bike / vehicle while in a high speed turn, there will be a change of the chassis dynamics, just ask anybody that races Porsches.
My '05 SEEG has been the most stable handling of any stock HD that I have ever ridden...

I didn't chop the throttle, I for lack of a better description stopped accelerating and eased off a little. I don't know if it was the road conditions, speed, or just decelerating a little that made it happen. Bike is an 05 seeg, good tires, only 6000 miles on the bike. I am a 40 year rider, Dirt, street , big and small bikes,  just an experience I never had before. Darn bike felt almost like it had a hinge in the middle of the frame. Some of our roads here in AR aren't in the best condition, that may have contributed. Still skeered the bejeesus out of me.

I have an 05 SEEG and I have never felt this on my bike thankfully, however I just rented a 2014 Ultra limited with water heads in San Diego and at approx 20 mph coasting, the bars started waggling so badly that had I not been holding them, I would have bit the dust.  This same bike was rock solid crossing the Mohave at speeds up to 105 mph.  What causes this?  Is it triple tree bearing preload or what?

Reckon now we can add the waterheads to the things we blame for the

The steering head setup on the 2014 Touring models is very different from the old system, so it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the assembly line sent a bunch of them out the door with incorrect bearing preload.  As we can tell from the coolant leak problems and the hydraulic clutch problems, they didn't do such a great job controlling quality during the 2014 production launch.  To answer the question from senorjeem, the bearing preload is definitely one of the things that will contribute to the low speed shake.

:P You may be onto something!  With the coolant leaks, possibly the water jacket was only partially full, causing a sloshing like a half full tanker truck!!  Yur a genius! :-*

I think that Harley changed the steering head bearings back in '06 also
