Spark advance tables front - rear different??
« on: July 10, 2013, 03:05:55 PM »

I have a SERT and was looking at the spark advance tables for my map when I noticed that the front and rear advance numbers are quite a bit different. Is this normal? I would have thought they would have been pretty close if not exactly the same. I would like to get opinions on what your experience has been. I am getting a bit of pinging around 2800 rpm and MAP of about 30. I was going to reduce the timing in that general area which is how I noticed the differences in the front/rear.

Yes, it's normal for the advance tables to be different. I think the rear cylinder uses more advance under many conditions. It seems counter-intuitive, and I can't explain why. I think it has to do with the fact that retarding the timing will cause a cylinder to run hotter? Maybe some else can chime in here?

If you can, take a look at which cylinder (if not both) is pinging, and what the engine temperature is too. You might be able to leave the advance tables alone, and make some temperature related adjustments instead?

I can't say for sure, because I use a TTS and I don't know what the capabilities of the SERT are. I'm learning about advance tables right now too...

Perfectly normal.   Your VE and spark tables will be different between the two cylinders.  I'll see if I can dig up a screenshot of my FLHTK's spark tables.....

Don't have screenshots of the tables, just the graphs.  Hopefully these come through....
