Speed Sensor Failure
« on: July 09, 2013, 08:42:19 PM »

This seems to be a constant problem with all the bikes I have owned,I have come to the conclusion that you are not suppose to ride in the rain or wash the bike.
I had three go out on my previous softail, and now one at 1900 miles on my new CVO,which when the speedo goes zonkers it affects the ecm and stalls.I know its
water related as it always happens during rain or washing, and no I do not use the car wash with high pressure.I have now greased all plugs with diaelectric grease, will see if that helps.Anyone else had many problems with these sensors?  Any suggestions?

Have only lost 1, on a 2ksoftail-no pun intended. It was a carb scoot, so all that was effected was the speedo. Aftermarket sensor or HD?

yep mine was a carb scoot to on the last 3,but with the CVO it relies on the speed to constantly change the ecm. This was under HD warranty but had to pay to tow and then the wait and wait.....getting to where I would rather have my toe hit with a hammer than deal with the arrogance of the HD service dept.

Mine is in the shop getting it replaced but during my first 1000 miles, water did not touch the bike.

Never had any issues with mine and don't take any special precautions when I wash it. Been caught in the rain several times too.  19K miles.  Now watch, it'll go out next week!  :o

It was in the shop for 5 days, went to pick it up and the time spent on it was .80 of a hour and the speed sensor was 61.00 (all warranty) Said there was corrosion.lol
Bought a sensor for future, dont want a problem out at Sturgis.  Ride safe everyone! btw my bike has 1900 mile on it

Ya know, I've looked back through the literature and I have not found any claims by the MoCo that their motorcycles are waterproof.  Obviously they aren't waterproof (and never have been), but at least Harley isn't guilty of making false claims in this case. ;)

A Harley riders best friend, at least in terms of electrical stuff, is a big tube of dielectric grease.

i rode my 01 on a trip through nebraska - two 8 hour days of torrential rain going west one fall - then two days of 40 degrees coming back.

when it was all over my wife said the rain was way better than the cold - or the snow in the mountains - she had her heated suit turned up all the way in the rain and the cold and snow. great trip other than the weather... <grin>

my 07 i end up riding in the rain at least a couple of times a month.

if i never rode in the rain id have a garage queen, still i rarely ride in the cold any more - getting wimpy as i get older.

I wash my 2000 Bike 54,000 miles and hit it good with water hose of 50psi. No problems with it at all.
