The 18 inch tire is or has not been readily available around the country. I have been in shops from Florida to Idaho, up and down this country and 16 inch tires are available everywhere.  If you travel more than a county and a half from home and need a tire maybe 1700 miles away the 16 inch is more available and buying one will not ruin your vacation by waiting for one to be delivered.

I've luckily never needed to, but I have checked when travelling at different dealerships and I have yet to find one that did not have the stock 18'' rear tire on hand.  granted, this is but a small sampling of dealerships out there, but I would think that with the number of cvos that have sold, that they would keep a stock of 18'' tires on hand.

Well, I ride about 24K a year since 2009.  I have been coast to coast, I have been to sturigs 6 times, key west 7 times.  I have never had an issue trying to get a tire for my CVO's.  In 15, I put 28K on my CVO in the first year, again no issues with tires.

I worry more about lifters.

Dave, wouldn't you just buy a new CVO if they didn't have your size tire in stock?

I'm amazed none of you guys have commented yet on the Air Soft plastic BB's being used for balancing.  Maybe I'm the only one who picked that up from the OP?

Jerry

I picked up on that too Jerry. It reminds me of using 3 golf balls to balance tires/wheels on an 18 wheeler. I have a set of old brake pads that have about 30% of material left on them, if anyone wants to save $.

Seriously rg89, you may want to look into putting a car tire on. Google "Darkside motorcycle tires". I have no personal experience doing this but some swear by it. 30,000+ on a single tire.

I haven't noticed many complaints from the folks on CVO Ultra/Limited models that use the 180/65 B16 tires (2009 to present).  Is that because they don't have the same problems, or is it because they just don't complain as much as the folks with the 180/55 B18's?  I've recommended to a few people who've asked my opinion that they could get a CVO rim from one of those models if they really wanted to try other brands.  It isn't necessary to go with a standard model rim.

I've thought of switching wheel sizes if only to get wider tyre choice and hopefully find a tyre with better grip.

Spinning up the rear on overtakes at moderate speed on a damp road is getting incredibly tiresome.

Commander II have been released and are shipping in the 180/55/18.  The front size has been out a bit.  $330 list isn't great but since I only have 2 tires, and my wife sits on back.....
